Polar explorer II 16570 - Buy or wait?

Hi Guys,

My collection is all dark dialled - if that makes sense.

Looking to pick up an explorer. Prefer the 40mm case and the polar dial. But having read 2021 is an anniversary year and having seen a few mock ups of an explorer with a ceramic bezel I may hold.

It's tricky as the explorer with a ceramic bezel removes it's tool watch credentials in favour of aesthetics but I think that small change catapults the watch in to drool territory. That said that watch is a maybe, maybe not scenario so do I pick up the explorer now or hold out til 2021?

Cheers

Not every reference in the catalog will get a ceramic bezel. Sure, that's what's being speculated but there's also very good reason for this one to stay stainless.

Buy the watch you like today that's available today. There's no way to predict tomorrow.

The only people who know what Rolex are going to do in 2021 work at Rolex, the rest of us can only guess and hope! I’d say if you want it and have the means, why wait?

Thanks - Must admit as someone that likes a nato / leather strap - the versatility appeals.

Guess so. Can always trade up if the ceramic gets released. Not sure where I saw the mock up - poss ID Guy on youtube but did look good. Almost like a less busy Daytona.

Agree with Erik, as I usually do.

As far as what happens with the addition (speculative at best) of a ceramic bezel, just look at the daytona...years before it happened, all the experts here predicted the immediate value drop of the 116520 should/if the ceramic bezel appeared. Guess what? It did, and look at the value of the 116520.

Bottom line, the EXP2 gives off a cool, tool watch vibe that nothing can ever take away from. It's not gonna matter one iota if a ceramic version is released.

So, like the man said, buy what you like today.

I was told, it's the simple fact that there's still an extremely high demand for the metal bezel options.

I don’t think I would like a ceramic bezel on the explorer.....changes the look of the watch too much. IMO So I would buy now and not worry about it.

And...I think that demand is going to follow the Daytona example-through the roof-if the ceramic bezel thing materializes (for the record, I neither want it or expect it it to).

You state preference for 40mm, yet the 42mm would be acceptable with a ceramic bezel ?

Should Rolex change the bezel, which is EXTREMELY doubtful, the case will not return to 40mm.

An Explorer II with ceramic bezel is as stupid as it gets. Buy a real nice one now and forget the pseudo hype about its anniversary. Most likely it will be a supersized bling-bling piece without a soul..

The 40mm explorer ii is a classic. A ceramic explorer could be nice also, but just a different look entirely. If you like the look of the models available today then it’s a no brainer. If you actually want a ceramic explorer then the answer is wait and see if the Rolex gods deliver. Or buy one now and sell it later if one ever comes.

This. Which size do you prefer, OP? If you haven’t, I’d recommend trying them on. I had the 16570 and it wore small for a 40mm. It was the main reason I eventually sold. I also tried on the 216570 several times, but it wore big for a 42mm, which is why I never bought.

Given you currently own a DSSD, I think the 16570 would wear way too small for your tastes, but only you can decide once you try it on.

This isn't the first time I've read this and without the ability to try both on, it really is a crapshoot. I can see the 40 wearing too small for me and I can see the 42 wearing a little bigger than I would prefer. While we are speculating, I'll throw out another wish - make it in 41mm!

Buy it. 16570 polar is my favorite among many many watches I own. It’s just perfect.

Good thinking. I must admit going from the deepsea to my 16600 takes some getting used to.

I have previously owned a 16710 and a ym 16622 so guessing it will wear the same(ish)? That said I always felt the daytona was too small so it left the collection. Will go and try one on to be sure.

Sorry, I was assuming a ceramic may go back to 40mm but didn't write that

I think at 42mm from what I have seen (not in person) the proportions do not work as well.

Someone else posted 41mm which sounds like it would be an ideal solution.

The 16570 polar is classic and regardless of what Rolex does in the future.. the 16570 stands on its own in my opinion. Buy the old boy and enjoy.

I think the proportions on the JC and my SD43 work really well. Prob even better on the SD43 to be fair.

I am talking about the difference between the 40mm polar and the 42mm and suggesting the 40mm looks better in my opinion. I am not saying I don't like larger watches.

Wait a week to see how stock market swings. Last time of the big crash (2008 / 2009) was buying with both hands as desperate sellers came out of the woodworks.

Ceramic is really not the end of it all, especially on a sport watch. I am glad my GS diver has an anodized bezel and not a ceramic one. Really hard to scratch, but cheap to replace if need be, and cannot shatter on impact. Rolex would be stupid to put a ceramic bezel on a watch made for alpinists and explorers, because it's an environment where they are always surrounded by rocks. One impact and the bezel is gone.

Ceramic should be coming and when it comes the explorer will become a so thought after watch just like the GMT and sub. The Ceramic use will not affect the tool aspect of the watch, it didn't affect the Sub, GMTs and the rest of the professional lineup, all the opposite. it's just a better material, more durable and more beautiful.
I would wait bezel 2020.

Hard to imagine that Rolex would go from a 42mm to a 40 to accommodate a ceramic bezel.
