was the hack or hacking mech available prior to '72

I wonder as i have just bought a 1601 which has a serial 21994** which I belive is 1968 and the second hand stops when crown pulled out. My other 1601 with serial 36443** which i believe is 1972- the second hand continues when the crown is pulled out.

Nice old timers the hacking feature was introduced to the Rolex line up most models they started to hack about the 2.9 million Serial number late 1960s early 1970s. But I think the Explorer started hacking earlier. The quick set date feature was introduced the very late 1970s and by 1983 all date models had the quick set feature. The Term hack is a military term for synchronisation between watches.

I'm not sure there is a precise answer, but my experience is thus:

Of my watches of that transitional era,

5513 (II 70) does hack

1016 (II 69) does not hack
