Not sure how many folks have noticed that the new Subs have not only wider lugs, but also straight brushed texture that matches the bracelet. The previous model Subs (and many other Rolex) have the lugs brushed in a diagonal direction that meets the bracelet and makes the watch head stand out a little more.

I don't think one is better than the other -- they are different and both appealing. The new approach makes the watch head and bracelet appear to be a singular unified design element and it is elegant. The older style has a little bit more aggressive look -- appropriate for a tool watch.

Any other thoughts on the change here? Please discuss.

I can get as anal as the next WIS, but I think both methods are fine and look great!

Probably too much surface area on the new lugs to have the diagonal brush, which would have accentuated how narrow the bracelet is in comparison to the lugs. The vertical brush therefore gives a bit more impression that the bracelet and lugs fit together.

Given the overall designs of new vs. old, I think, therefore, that Rolex got the lug brushing correct on both models.

Diagonal for life. Otherwise it just looks like its been through a belt sander.

IMO I prefer the straight brush finish much easier to rebrush. :D

Was just comparing my 16710 with my sub C lugs. I agree with you that both are appealing but if I have to choose, I think I prefer diagonals

The straight brushed will be harder to touch up/refinish than the diagonal. Will probably be a job best left to Rolex. I suspect the bezel and crystal would have to be off and the whole watch done at once to keep the lines parallel.

Diagonal would not look good on the new bigger/wider lugs.
Straight brush looks good on the new bigger lugs

On the old models only diagonal. I have seen a few 16610 with straight brush after a service, that just looks wrong.

Great comments in this thread! It is interesting that the straight brushing on the Sub-C lugs has a "creamier" smooth look and it does help to make those ginormous shoulders blend with the narrow bracelet. The brushing technique almost makes the lugs appear to round over more and has a more mellow appearance on the wrist. Hard to describe it in words.

I noticed this too, Eric. When I had my Milgauss brushed, I specifically asked Jack to do it diagonally, in the same fashion as the older Subs and Explorers.

Eric, the Milgauss was originally polished!

I had Jack custom brush it, and I specifically requested diagonal brushing. I think the Milgauss, not having lugs quite as boxy as the newer ceramic sport models, can handle it well.

I am not exaggerating at all when I say I love it infinitely more now than I did when it arrived as new. Brushed (whether diagonal or vertical) is how this watch was meant to be.
