decision time - Pepsi 16700 or Submariner

Hello Rolex brains....

I am in the happy position to soon be gifted a vintage Rolex of my choosing (I know - awesome!)

Always having been a fan of Rolex, but not having much knowledge at all (full disclosure etc.), I went to a few stores here in New York, and narrowed it down to 2 items.

One if a Submariner from the 60's at Tourneau, with tropical dial. I love the 'usedness' of it, and the no-nonsense aspect of the thing.

The other is a 16700 GMT Pepsi. I love it for the icon thing - it's like a Ferrari 308, in a way - you look at it, you see it, and all the bells are ringing. This one is at Aron Faber.

I am not a collector, but who knows, maybe this will be my first piece of a fledgling collection?
Which brings me to my next point - I like them both. But I also want to make a wise investment. I'm not going to flip it, since i'll be happy to own it in the first place. But you guys, I figure, know real well which one would be the 'smarter' investment down the road. And since i like them both, I need your input.

There was also the first Quartz one Rolex made, of which i loved the design of...but a Quartz Rolex just seems...odd? But maybe that's precisely what makes it so interesting.

Anyway, here are the photos. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Also, in terms of dealers, those two are reputable and all that, right?
Is it customary that they rarely come with a 'certificate of authenticity' of some sort?

I don't think either of them look great. You don't mention price which is always a factor but I would guess that if you are looking to purchase from the dealer mentioned then you are going to be paying top dollar for some pretty average examples.Personally my advice would be to keep shopping around and to perhaps buy yourself a current sports model to wear whilst you develop your knowledge of the pre-owned market. Who told you that was a Sub from the 60s? It's not. Not even close. And while I do like 16800 Subs, you can find a much much nicer one that that.
And if you prefer matte dials, find one of those.
I personally couldn't buy any watch w WG surrounds. They just look cheesy to me. But, of you like THOSE, then there are plenty of expamples out there.
Regardless, do NOT feel obligated to jump on the first watch you see.

The sub is a 16800 mk3 dial and is not from the 60's, more like 82, 83 with a 7.5 ish mil serial The dial is toast and will be hard to sell in the future. Do the right thing take the 16700

And I'm not quite so sure about one of the dealers anymore, after reading a few things here...

16700 only came in a coke insert or all black. So the pepsi insert was added later.

If you've got a gift like this comment, spend a few months looking through the classified section on this forum focusing on the impeccable Sellers here. Depending on your budget, you're fine much better watches than those pictures, and you'll avoid the misinformation and a mistake.

AGREED on the WG, 100%. You've got two very different watches there, both from a reference and look perspective... spend time on the forum and suss out the reference and look (patina, case) you want then show us a couple of candidates and you will get a lot of great information. From there you'll have the confidence to make the purchase you want.

Then you'll want another one...

The highlighted post above by v.lats97nsx is incorrect. The GMT 16700 was available with black inserts or blue/red "Pepsi" inserts. "Coke" inserts were not an original insert available on the GMT 16700. I've owned several 16700s, and own one now with the correctly coded warranty paper for the "Pepsi" insert.

So others know what was available on the sapphire GMT models, in case misinformation is posted again, here you go:

ORIGINAL FACTORY INSERTS:

GMT 16700 - black or blue/red
GMT II 16760 - black/red only
GMT II 16710 - black, red/blue, black/red
