IWC looks great plus there is your grandfather's connection.

AFAIK it should be called Messerschmitt.
IWC supplied watches for German pilots during WWII.

IWC supplied watches also to the British Armed forces in 1944.

So, basically, IWC played with both Axis and Allies during WWII. Both Luftwaffe and RAF.

Based on my taste I would disagree with many of the replies and say the Speedmaster, since I find the IWC design much too busy. However, if you're looking to connect with your Grandfather's history through the watch and you think the IWC would do that then opt for that one. A purely practical question - have you tried the spitfire on a bracelet or would you want to? I find the Speedmaster can be nicely dressed up or down but the IWC looks out of place in a dress environment (obviously just my opinion). Lastly, if you're not wedded to these two as an option, have a look at the CWC 1970 RAF PILOTS CHRONOGRAPH which might actually be closer to something your Grandfather would have worn. Either way, keep us updated and enjoy the search.

I very much prefer IWC pieces from the 1990s and early 2000s to their current offering. While I understand the OP wants to buy new I would recommend picking up an IWC Fliegerchronograph 3706 instead. Half the price, tried and tested Valjoux movement, optional + incredibly good pyramid bracelet, and not trying too hard to look vintage. Also prefer the 39mm case of the 3706 over 41mm personally. The rotor noise of the Valjoux is the only downside I can see, not sure how the in-house movement compares in that respect.

No wrong choice here. I personally would go for the IWC Spitfire. OP should consider buying BNIB from one of the trusted sellers on TRF rather than from an AD, as these usually depreciate. The new IWC Spitfire range should start hitting the grey market over the next few months.

The Speedy is a classic, but the new IWC Spitfire range is stunning. I would go for the IWC out of the two.

I’ve tried that IWC and it wears really well. I like that they’re making smaller watches for a change. I’d go IWC in this case
