Me too, i haven't really looked at Comex dials before as i won't ever be lucky enough to buy one. I thought something didn't look quite right and then after others replied I learnt/saw what! Can't ask for more on a forum/thread really.

Great info everyone! The first thing I didn't like about the watch was the way the SEL's edges seemed rounded or tell tail "Faux". The rest of the observations create a great learning curve....

Interesting . . . I thought this was going to be about meeting Wayne Gretzky from the headline but then again this isn't a hockey forum . . .

I'm not Sea Dweller Savvy (certainly not 1665).... but when Rolex came out with the SEL models throughout the line, they machined a lip/shelf on the back of the case to locate the lower SEL flange and make a smooth caseback transition.. I would like to see the backside of a 1665 to verify.
Earlier models do not have that machined lip (and neither does the current 14060M Sub), so a typical SEL Rolex bracelet won't generally fit correctly.. The one pictured is very likely an aftermarket... Here is an aftermarket I modified to fit on a Sub that has spring bar holes in a different place.. You can see the similarity...

I cannot comment on seadweller casebacks but I have had (not too long ago in fact)a sumbmariner come in that the caseback had been caved in due to pressure on a dive..
not sure how my watchmaker fixed it up but it came back looking good as new! I do know that the seadweller caseback was supossedly 1/3rd thicker,so it should take quite a bit of pressure to collapse it! |

I don't know. It looks like the bracelet he has is straight from a 16660, not a 16600, but then, my expertise is shark movie watches.
To recap, we have an aftermarket dial, incorrect caseback, and likely an incorrect bracelet. Can't wait to see his Paul Newman Daytona. |

All this talk of Comex...great ! In the mid 70's I was working for a contractor in the
North Sea and the diving contractor was Comex. I got friendly with a couple of the divers and was always interested in the chunky watches they wore, I don't have to tell you what they were eh? One day one of the guys offered me his watch for $200, saying that he a couple and was soon to buy the gold version. Well you know what ? I turned him down ! Y'see I thought it kinda ugly and I much preferred my Omega with the modified Accutron Movement. AAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! |
