Icon5 are gmt II and explorer the same?

Is there a difference between the two besides the bezel? The explorer has the 4th hand also, so i guess they are the same?

Both have the same movement 3185/ 3186, but the Explorer II is available with a black or white dial.

Also, if comparing Explorer II with the GMT II-C, the II-c has a maxi dial, so bigger indices and minute hand. The II-c also has PCLs and a newer clasp design which the Explorer II does not.

As you have noted, the bezel would be the only functional difference.

assuming you're implying the 16710 gmt2 compared to the 116710 gmt2c, there is little difference between the 16710 and 16570 - feel, fit, clasp, movement, etc.

add a rotating bezel to the exp2, and you have a 16710.

The bezel on the GMT II allows you to track a third time zone. As mentioned above, the only difference in the two is cosmetic, they are both powered by a cal. 3186.

Have to agree but add 3185 was used too, some had the 3186 which is a modded 3185.

On thing that people are forgetting, but a slight detail that helped me decide to flip my Exp II for a GMT II is on the dials, GMT II: The Rolex name and coronet are larger since the "GMT MASTER II" are at the bottom, above the 6. VS: smaller ROLEX and coronet on the Exp II since "EXPLORER II" is on top below the 12: the letters are smaller since they're more crowded.

Not a big deal, but it's something I take notice of...

minor but valid point... i've included two pics to better illustrate the point. i don't have a direct comparison, but using the sub, you can compare the exp2 and gmt2.

also, what i've found interesting is that the text on the sub is generally bolder. look at the chronometer text on the sub and exp2. there was so much room on the bottom of the exp2 dial to expand the text and yet it remains smaller than the sub's chronometer text while the sub still manages to squeeze depth rating and model name in there.

another subtle observation (others can chime in here) is that the tick marks on the sub's minute register are a wee bit thicker on the sub than the exp2. it doesn't show up well in the first photo, but it was the first thing i noticed while handling both. i assume this is because the sub needs to be read at greater depths, so all white on the dial is larger, bolder and more legible. and props to rolex's high-minded design that unless you look for these differences, you don't initially notice them.

It would look strange if the SCOC text was big and bold when the top dial text is not.

The more bold letters crammed together the more crowded the dial appears IMO.

When I bought my Exp II with 3186, the saleslady told me that if guys didn't ask for the movement, then they will push out the 3185 first, so you have got to quote for 3186 in your AD.

The only functional difference is the rotating bezel. And well its a tad larger because of the supercase.

When I bought my GMT II Pepsi, I had a choice between the GMT II or the Explorer II with the white or black dial. I chose the Pepsi because of the rotating bezel and the Pepsi colors and have been very happy and satisfied!!!
Each to their own though.....

Yes. Some of the late Z's also have the 3186 movement. I confirmed on a SN Z818XXX. The difference in movements are the antimagetic properties of the parachrome spring and a supposed improvement of the snap hour adjustment. I have had both side by side and cannot tell any difference in the hour adjustment.
