What’s up with my dial?

Hey folks - I got my GMT II 16760 used and it came with these weird lines on the dial. Any idea what the previous owner did or is this natural? This looks to be the original dial. Should I just go ahead and update the dial? No such service papers came with the watch. Thanks!

Please don't replace the dial without posting photos first

If the dial looks like the picture below, it's a "fault" known as "spider dial". The lacquer that makes the dial glossy cracks and gives it a spider-web effect (hence the nickname).

You just bought it and only realized now that the dial looks like this?

If your 16760 dial says "Oyster Perpetual" under Rolex and is missing the hyphen between GMT and MASTER then I personally wouldn't update it unless you can retain the original.

If it says "Oyster Perpetual Date" then it's less rare and really depends on the buyer if they happen to be into spider dials.

Either way, try to retain the original dial and hands if you do decide to update them. Avoid sending it into a Rolex Service Center if retention is your goal.

Post photos when you can. I believe you need 10 forum posts to post images.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the photos used for selling the watch were all shot at an angle where the spidering doesn't show up. All it takes is a a degree or two of tilt (maybe even less) to obscure the effect.
I will say, if that was the case, and the seller didn't mention that the dial was damaged...and don't be mislead. One can call it spidering, but it's damaged....you should return it immediately.
