F.P. Journe & Chanel

Evidently, Chanel has purchased a 20% stake in FP Journe. I never thought I'd see the day where Journe gave up some ownership, especially to an odd pairing like Chanel.

A somewhat odd pairing indeed. I hope he sold the 20% stake for a lot. I'm not sure this helps Journe as a company but it certainly helps him.

not typical but not unheard of,

among a list of fashion companies, lvmh (Louis Vuitton) owns watch brands such as Bulgari and TAG Heuer.

hopefully the vision of fpj remains true.

FPJ was never 100% owned by FP – he had a number of investors. We’re not sure if he’s liquidated some of his own share or it’s one of the investor who’s sold theirs.

It wasn’t that long ago members here deliberated on buying any of his pieces, just in case he kicked the bucket sometime in the next 20 years!
This should give any remaining waverers all the confidence they need to stop worrying about servicing concerns.

I think you would probably be hard pressed to find an independent that has not has to sell a minority amount of equity to finance the high fixed costs of the business.

As long as it is a minority the patriarch of the business will have autonomy.

Oh, I'm not lamenting him giving up a minority stake. I'm more curious with regards to the investor. Chanel seems like an odd pairing to me, but I guess I'll wait for the specifics.

Guess they want to diversify their portfolio.

If you look at the range of investments LVMH and Richemont hold it’s not unusual at all.

Who knows what this mean, but I bet ”pre-Chanel FPJ” will become a thing on the watch market.

The best source on this so far:
http://thejourneguy.com/f-p-journe-s...-independence/

Chanel's owners are friends of Mr. Journe, they are silent partners and receive no dividends, and the money from the sale is reinvested entirely. It doesn't actually make sense fr Chanel, except as what it is, friends joining in FPJ's preservation.

I was concerned until I read more into it.

Definitely puts me at ease. This seems to just be a cash injection. I'm glad they'll have a hands off approach and allow the company to operate as normal.

Interesting stuff, thanks for posting. Glad FPJ got a cash infusion even if it’s from friends.

Well if you’re going to take sides with anyone Chanel is a great brand.

Fpj said he intends to develop a new grand complication to replace the grand sonnerie. This year is supposed to be the last year the grand sonnerie is produced.

Well, I am glad I read through this entire thread before posting a rant. Seems like this is not a bad thing.

Hi,

It seems many find Chanel a strange pairing but to me it makes plenty of sense.

Chanel is a FRENCH company that is INDEPENDENT, so FP Journe, a Frenchman, selling a stake to a fellow independent company with a long successful history seems to fit in more with his ethos than selling to a Swatch or Richemont. As a collector of FP Journe I'm more comfortable with this pairing than if he'd sold to these larger conglomerates, and the fact that the Chanel owner is a large personal collector and friend of the brand also helps!

Furthermore, Greubel Forsey sold 20% of their company to Richemont just 2 years after establishing their brand and no one seems to mind this fact today.

I do believe there are long term benefits, but time will tell :)

Any chance Chanel wants his help improving their brand, horologically, and that's why they made the investment?

This is what I was thinking as well. Maybe FPJ helps them build their watch brand a bit, supplying some more basic movements.
