Hey guys,

I found a very beat up 6614, maybe a replaced dial. I'm not sure what to make of this watch. Curious what people that know 6610/6614 much better than I might think of its realness. Serial is chopped as well, but looks to be 6 digit starting with 31- - - -, so maybe 1957/1958

Any advice from the hive mind is appreciated

I'm not sure it qualifies as "beat up". But it's had plenty of work done, that's for sure. And the damage to the engravings is highly suspect...

The damage to the engraving does not look like normal bracelet wear or corrosion. I would be afraid that it was done intentionally to cover up the original serial number.

My guess is someone tried to scratch off the serial and model number to pass it off as a 6610 rather than 6614. Unsure if that's a real dial, but looks pretty cool

I can't help but feel sorry for the poor thing! The 6614 gets no respect unless you dress it up as an Explorer! That's too bad! I like 6614s, yes the dials tended to get ugly rather quickly, but it's a solid watch and can keep excellent time.

Replica Explorer 6610 dials and sets of hands are readily available from two well known suppliers. The ones on this watch look like their offerings from Vietnam, so I'm in agreement that this was a 6614 converted to look like a 6610 with recent replica parts.

It's a shame to do this because, as already noted above, a 6614 is a good watch to have and it is a little unusual in having a 36mm case. I'd take an honest 6614 any day rather than a modified pretend 6610 with replica parts, but large numbers of people disagree and so these Frankenwatches continue to be built and some eventually get put up for sale.
