5712 Geneva Seal or 5712 2020?

I am considering a 2008 5712 in excellent condition with Geneva seal versus a brand new 2020 5712. The pricing is similar from the 2 watch dealers.

My question is should I go after the Geneva seal with screws on bracelet or the new 5712? I am going to wear this watch and will not be a safe queen. Thanks for your feedback in advance!

I would definitely go with the screw bracelet. The weight of the screws adds a nice feel, drape and heft to the bracelet you simply will never get from the lighter pins. Hopefully, Patek will return to screws but since the watches are selling like crazy and nobody seems to care, probably it will never happen.

A new watch or a 12 year old watch for the same price? I’d get the new one.

Although the screwed bracelet is technically nicer, as Bob says no one seems to care, and it doesn’t bother me one bit with the 5990.

I find the pins not at all a problem. A watch vise and a small hammer. Voila.

I mean I’d say pick what speaks the most. I find myself in a similar situation with the 5167a. I am not sure how I feel about a watch over 10 years old. I mean I’d taken care of and serviced, they should last a very long time.

Yep you should get new one, in case you ever want or need to sell , it will be much easier to do. I have a 5990 with pins and screws in my 5711 - can’t tell any difference. Geneva seal doesn’t seem to matter . Enjoy your new piece . james in San Antonio Tx:-))

I don’t know, maybe it’s like old refrigerators that are built well and last forever, while the new stuff is junk. Just saying.

NAh, new for me

I’d go new. Nobody seems to care about Geneva seals...yet.

Just paid $1,200 for service on my 5711... imagine that the added complications make the 5712 more (I’m sure someone else here can help w/ details)

You’re looking at that upcoming hit plus 2 months of not having the watch.

In this case same price =/= same price.

I’d go with new.

As you mention it is to be worn not collectors piece so I don’t think Geneva seal will matter to you. Also the new is under warranty and unless just serviced presume the 2008 watch isn’t. If later you find out the 2008 watch needs serviced it will be additional cost and away for 3/4 months. Easy decision

New when 2008 vs 2020 at same price.

2008 when 2008 vs 2010/11/12 at same price.

I guess it depends on what is important to you:

-if movements matter -

-if you plan to hold longer than todays trends -

Then yes the Geneva Seal may well be important.

I would favor the Geneva Seal over the new PP criteria in any modern reference for a longterm hold. The Geneva seal is part of the charm for me, they stopped making them and PP will produce more and more watches every year forward and I think they will likely matter later to niche collectors later on.

I also favor the first two generations of the 3970's as they were hand polished. I think these details matter.

Details matter to me, I guess much like the vintage Rolex collectors over the dial details.

I'd opt for new if pricing is similar-

I can agree with this. I mean I am not going to lose sleep if I didn’t have a deal as I just want to get my hands on a gray 5167a. But since you have option to get both, I have been thinking since last post I’d go with the deal. Who knows down the road could be worth more but that shouldn’t be your reason to buy it. Buy if you really like it.

I'm going to be the voice of reason and tell you that all Nautilus on the grey market are currently selling at stupid and unsustainable prices and that for far less you can get yourself a used 'high' horology piece from any number of manufacturers.

If you simply have to have the piece then of course the 2020 piece is the way to go.
