Another Lange vs. Patek question

Wanted to get a few opinions. I own and Lange 1815 up / down in rose gold (234.032). I have an opportunity to trade up to a Patek 5146g-001. Good idea or not. I welcome your thoughts. Thanks.

Excellent idea, not at all the same league of watch. You’d go from a fairly basic entry level Lange to a sleeper icon of Patek. The 5146g is also a wonderful watch in and of itself, aside from what it represents, especially in WG. If you pay around 29-30k for it, you should not take too much of a bath either if you resell. I‘m pretty biased though, as I‘m in the process of purchasing one...

I own an 1815 up/down also, and if I were going to trade it up for an annual calendar (and I may at some point—thought about it instead of the up/down) it would be for the 1815 annual calendar.

The 5146 has never quite done it for me and the 1815AC is by far my favorite calendar watch at anything close to the price point.

I own and like both ALS and Patek.. while I don't own either of these two-- I would go with your ALS -- no contest

Keep the 1815 up/down which is the much prettier watch than any Patek AC in my book.

I'm also close to acquiring a 5146g since the 5712 wait will be very very long.
I have owned a few vintage Patek's only so can't really compare quality.
I have read on more than one occasion that Lange may very well an equal/better quality watch. Both are must have brands imo

Aesthetically I prefer the 1815.... but If you are a one-watch guy and will enjoy the annual calendar complication, then the concept of trade is reasonable though it’s

I’m personally not impressed by the Up-down. The 5146, though, is a watch you would buy for a lifetime. Go for it!

You have good taste. I would make the trade as long as you aren't taking a bath on the u/d. I mean, the 5146 is an ac from the company that invented the complication. Very cool!

You are going to take a big bath on the Lange when selling / trading it. I would keep it, the craftsmanship is amazing and not properly valued on the secondary market. 5146 also comes at a great discount on the secondary market but you are still going to take a hit from the dealer "spread". The watches are also quite different, so you need to decide what look you like the most. PP is more complicated and a more busy dial, while the 1815 is more of a "less is more" balanced design but obviously not as complicated.

i own the 5146G-001
and it is everything you need from a watch. sized perfectlry, the WG case with off-white creamy dial is really dressy piece. the moonphase complication, and day month indicators are really legiable and perfectly centered if you have OCD.
I find the power reserve complication to be extremly useful on the patek.
my vote goes for the patek, timeless piece

Good idea. Both are beautiful in their own rights, but the 5146 beats the 1815 updown in complications and history (Patek being the first to invent the annual calendar complication).

For me the quintessential Lange should have a big date complication by default.

On the other hand, the 5146 is everything a quintessential patek should be; annual calendar, moon phase, power reserve. Perfect.

I too was on the hunt for 5146 AC WG grey dial. I am a fan or PR indicators so the Lange 1815 UP down and 5146 check that box well.

I heavily favor manual wind watches over
Auto, especially with highly decorated movements. I also get a lot of joy winding my pieces.

The way I see it:

If you don’t mind auto and want a date aperture, want lumed hands and hour dots and “keep the PR indicator” then sell the up/down and get the 5146

Otherwise, The 1815 AC has a nicer/larger moonphase than the 5146, 72 hr PR vs. 45 hr; but no indicator), nicely decorated movement

It looks like they both have similar msrps and resale values, so this should be a wash.

I ultimately chose the original Pt 403 Datograph as my first Lange as I fell in love with black polish of the chrono movement and wanted the large date complication. Many watch companies link date complications with auto movements so I take notice when the watchmaker choose a date complication with manual movement.

Thank you for your response. I realize I am not the OP, but I appreciate your thoughtful and informative post. I had forgotten that I have wanted a manual wind watch. I admire Lange's movements and finish, but the Datograph is a bit complicated for me. You remind me that my next watch should be a manual wind--after another G-Shock. Thanks, again.
