First Patek: 5296 or 5107
Hi All. New to the Patek Forum and looking to buy my first Patek. I am considering the 5107R or 5296R Calatrava. I looked at the 5227 at the local Patek dealer and I just do not like the look of the dial. Another option is the 5035P with the silver dial Annual Calendar.
My current collection consists of 2 Rolexes (Hulk and Pepsi BLRO) and a 15400st AP Royal Oak with the white silver dial. I would prefer to go with a rose gold to add some color to my collection which is currently all steel, hence I am leaning towards the 5296 or 5107 over the 5035P. 5196R is out because I like all my watches to have a date function. Any advice from anyone that has experience with these watches would be appreciated. Unfortunately, my Mrs will not allow my budget to go over 25K so looking mainly at the Calatrava range and what is available in the secondary market. Many thanks in advance! |

5146 - go on the hunt - they can be had right under $25k on the secondary market. Davidsw had one recently that was tempting - full set and the more desirable deployant.

Thanks Watchflair. I will check out the one by David SW. He also has a 5227 for under $21K.

I'd much rather get either a 5107 or 5296 than an AC for the cleaner look. For a complicated calendar I'd go 3940 PC.
Just like you I am not a fan of 5227 and also prefer to have a date. Between 5107 and 5296 there is no right or wrong, similar movements except for the beat rate, just a matter of personal taste. The question is which bezel design you prefer and if you like crown guards or not. In my eyes 5296 looks more traditional and classic, 5107 more avant-garde. The 5296 wears quite large w its basic and empty dial, never tried on a 5107. My first Patek has been a 3998 many years ago. No regrets but most would find it too small. I'd certainly recommend to try them all on at preowned dealers before making a decision. |

Have you looked at the 5127? Thinner bezel vs. 5107 and has a date.

3940 is out of his price range. Reason I suggested the 5146 is based off his current collection. He has some vibrant pieces now and the basic time only 5227 which is awesome with the officers case back may be too plan compared to the other pieces in the line up. The AC at 39mm may pop just enough to warrant proper wrist time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

From your selection I prefer the 5296. But as someone said if you can find a 5127 it would be even nicer over the 5107 due to the thinner bezel and better overall balance.

5296r is such a classic look. I recently tried on a 5107j and it was just too small for me.
I picked up a 5196g and somehow it isn’t too small, probably because it’s all one color. I also considered the 5296 and 5227 but since I won’t be wearing it daily, I went with the 5196 since I don’t need a date. My collection also includes a 15400 black, BLNR and ceramic Daytona |

Thanks all. Appreciate all of the advice. I have looked at 5127, but there are honestly not that many of these on the secondary market at all. Same appears for 5107R and 5296R as I am leaning towards the Rose Gold (too much steel and white gold will look more of the same). There appear to be a bigger selection of ACs on the secondary market. Watchflair, I have not seen 5146 Acs for $25K with full set. Will keep looking. Chute, that is a nice collection! I am a really big fan of the AP15400. At the moment, that is my watch of choice with formal wear (until I add the Patek).

The 5107 or the 5127 is my favorite Calatrava. Beautifully executed in a simple modern case. Same movement as the Nautilus and Aquanaut of that period.

I would get the 5296 over the 5107.

Hi Tan. I looked at it. I agree but the price different was around $6,000. Could not justify that large of a difference so I went with the 5107.

good choice for all the good reasons, you got a great watch and saved 6k for your next watch. now that you have the PP bug, you will need that 6k for sure for your next puchase
