I would save another 1k and get a new DJ41 smooth bezel or go for a slightly used DJ or Milgauss in his budget. Of course an OP39 is a smart buy as well and dresses up and down very well.

I would advise your friend to wait until he has enough to get the watch he really wants (126334). Any other watch will be compared to the watch he really wants and fall short.

It's nice to see so many people recommending GS here and that's my vote as well for $6K or maybe a speedmaster.

I’d consider a GS. Snowflake or a HiBeat.

I figure if I had $6k to spend on my first nice watch, I’d try to spend as much of that as possible.

He’s more looking for something on the dressier side, not as interested in any sport models.

Any other watches from any other brands you guys would suggest he look at?

Takuya has a 1 yr old 126300 DJ for $6K-ish here on TRF. It’s a white dialed one.

Agreed! Excellent choice. Might have to come up a few hundred but it’s in the market. If he wants something dressier go with the explorer 39mm 214270.

How about a Rolex T.O.G.
Sporty and dressy at the same time. Can be had for around $6,000.00.

One of the GS's already mentioned, maybe a used Explorer 2,
this omega master chronometer:

Used Blancpain Bathyscaphe, 40mm fifty fathoms GMT or Lemans Flyback,
Breguet Type XXI, pretty much any IWC Pilot etc......

Just tell him to save for what he really wants. $6k on a watch is no joke, but if that's disposable income, $9k shouldn't be that hard to reach.

I bought my OP39 with the thought of wearing it for a few years and then flipping it and getting a TT Sub which is the watch I was really lusting after. But now having the OP for the last year I don't think I want to give it up. What's a guy to do? of course he saves up for the TT sub. But I'm keeping the OP39. It's a great versatile watch.

I would go either OP or a speedy (3570.50)

Thanks,

Then have your friend save another 3k. If that's what he likes, that's what he likes.

The DJ41 isn’t that far outside his budget. I paid $7350 for mine new from an AD.

I am two weeks in with the OP39, Rhodium dial. It is a stunning piece, and (to me) looks 'balanced' as it is more symmetrical than any model with a date cyclops. I bought it from an AD for just over $5000. My bro-in-law has a DJ41 with the smooth bezel - it wasn't worth the extra 1500, he now says :)
