Black Dial GMT vs New Sub
Hi all,
I’m in the market for a new stainless Rolex. Any opinions on a mint 2010 GMT 116710LN vs a new (21 or 22) Sub 126610LN? I know the black dial GMT is discontinued. Would that give the watch more value in the future? Also know the new Subs are redesigned and have a more streamline look being they dropped the Maxi Case. Lastly what are the problems with the 32XX movements? Would the older 31XX be a better investment. In the end I know opinions are like *#%¥*!# and in the end it is all personal choice. However, there is a lot of knowledge on this forum and I would appreciate everyone’s input. Thank you in Advance. |

Black Dial GMT vs New Sub
Discontinued doesn’t mean much for a decade long mass produced watch. The new subs are nice and visually sleeker. The 32xx movement issue, is really only an issue for people who are very very very particular people. The biggest upgrade is the longer power reserve of the newer generation movement.
Me personally prefer the GMT. The GMT function is useful and the bezel can be used as an impromptu timer though not accurate as it is 24 clicks unlike the old bezels that were 120. |

I had a similar ‘predicament’ and ended up with 116701LN. Couldn’t be more happy, utility in my experience is better with a GMT, but YMMV..

Get both, you won't regret it. The LN is classic with the green GMT hand and PCLs. The Sub date won't let you down either. Perfect for recreational diving, snorkeling and happy hour.
Nevermind "value" or a few posts on movement issues. |

The LN GMT is a perfect watch if you get the centre links brushed IMO.

There’s currently 2847 posts spanning 95 pages (in one thread) regarding the 32** movement issue. Far from “a few posts”

I prefer the Sub due to the glidelock over the GMT complication.
With that said, splitting hairs I'm happy with either watch. |

Like as is said already, make your purchase based on what you’ll love and not as an investment plan. That said, I prefer the new Sub and if in your shoes, I’ll go for that.

Try both on, the GMT will be better for smaller wrists.

You mentioned value and investment….as you say @%$&*$# that
Go with the one you like the most on your wrist, no wrong answer between those two, and minimal differences in case profile and comfort…IMO. Neither will be “investment” type references. |

No wrong choice as they're both great references.
I'm sure you must be leaning towards one over the other. That's the one to get. |

The decision for me comes down to whether I want a diver or a GMT complication

I find the GMT a more interesting watch in appearance and function. With that said, I would not pay a significant premium for the GMT even though it is discontinued. In looking at age, service, if there was one and price the Submariner might be the choice for a daily wearer. A solution might be the 11xxxx or a five digit Submariner if you are cautious about the 3200 movement. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I happen to own both (2017 GMT LN & 2021 Subdate). I had time graphed them & both are spot on time wise at +1 spd. The amplitude typically runs lower on the new 32XX which it does on mine, 265 or so last I recall. That’s a tough choice between either or, that’s your call which you would prefer.

As padi indicated the “investment” idea just clouds your choices (a good investment may not be what you like on the wrist) and takes the fun out. The gmt has the giant lugs and looks like a circle on square from the top. The wide lugs with the bracelet makes the thing look less integrated. The old sub 4/5 digit and new one the bracelet looks like it flows in an integrated way from the case. Rolex understood that as a mistake and that’s why they gradually pared back the lug girth on the newer gmt and threw it out all together with the sub.
The Rolex sub and gmt case was largely the same for like 50 years and then they began tinkering with it in very short intervals-very unrolex like. People collect all kind of things and many junk but it’s all I. The eye of the beholder but the massive lugs experiment was a way of making the watch appear bigger to appease the giant watch as wrist clock crowd who wan recognition for wearing a Rolex without actually changing the dimensions and alienating others. While I think the gmt is tue more versatile watch, the current sub more inline with what it always was. The gmt just looks like jewelry. I saw that exact model on a fellow the other day at the pool, it’s like the 5 digit and 6 digit from a distance might as well be a different watch. |

Thanks everyone for the great advice. Everything from the “circle on a box” to the 32XX “noise move on” was just what I was looking for. Also forgot to mention that although the GMT is a beautiful watch, I am looking to get away from the bling a little. Due to that, the new streamlined design of the Sub and your great remarks I am leaning toward a new Sub. Thanks again, great group.

If you say that the 126610LN has been slimmed down, why are you going to look for the GMT that is left fat?
Regarding the 3235 movement, I have two watches with that caliber and never any problems. |

There’s nothing to move on from. The OP already knows it’s an issue so there’s no reason to lie to him/her. There’s a chance OP will experience, like a lot of members on this forum, and I mean a lot of members who have gone months, and at times more than once, without their new Rolex while it went back and forth to Rolex to fix the issue. That is a real inconvenience that someone considering a purchase might experience and should consider (as the OP is doing). It will not deter 99.9% of buyers, including me, but it doesn’t mean we should just sweep it under the rug. The 32** issue is unprecedented (from the little I know about Rolex’s history), and some members on here are on their way to purchasing their one and only Rolex, and might not have the aspiration, passion (for the brand), patience or time to deal with a potentially troublesome watch I own a 32** Datejust so please know there is no bias coming from me against this movement. All I’m saying is the consideration or reluctance to purchasing one is understandable Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

In black I personally prefer the 16710. If not I prefer the Submariner.

The GMT LN is the perfect watch and I regret letting it go. Now I have the new Sub and it’s also perfect lol.
I’d go with the Sub in this case, especially one from an AD. It’s new and under warranty, significantly less expensive at retail…and it’s yours, not something that’s circulated on other peoples wrists for 12 years. |

I prefer the black GMT over Black Sub. I might be biased though since I own a black GMT.

Between these two, I’d stick with the Sub Date 41.
However, BLNR > 126610 |
