If you were a writer...
What rolex would you wear?
I imagine it would be something classic. But looking for some other thoughts. |

Something light, legible, and non sporty. Perhaps a vintage silver stick dial datejust on a cordovan leather strap.

Do you mean while writing, or in general? I write (and edit others) for a living, but always take my watch off while I am working. My watch collection is quite diverse.

In general. I image a watch would be a significant piece, and one worn through the years. I ask because I am about to be published. I owned an Airking and a ceramic GMT, but sold both of them. Now looking for something else.

I've been in the business for more than 20 years (newspapers/magazines/books) but no watch owned throughout, sorry to say. I can see the romantic appeal, though. I keep old keyboards that I used for writing certain books.

When I used to write, I used to take my watch off.
If we are talking Rolex, a lighter model with a small clasp such as OP, Explorer 1 or DJ would be my choice.

why di you sold your Airking? in my opinon, this watch was perfekt for your demand.
An Explorer is nice, but i think a little bit like a sports watch. maybe a simple Oyster Perpetual? Only with central Seconds and no date. Clearly dail - that your minds going to clear for writing ;) |

I use a ceramic Sea-Dweller as my daily wearer in rotation with a Datejust 2, YM2, Milgauss GV, Exp 2 and Deepsea. When writing (or to be more accurate, typing on a computer) I've found the Milgauss be the most comfortable.

I may be wrong, but I would think what watch one would wear would be more a function of one's sense of style and fashion, as opposed to occupation...just my thoughts.

I'm a writer. And while I usually wear a 14060 or a 16550, I'm always drawn to the classic simplicity of 36mm Explorers, OP's and AK's.
I think there's a tendency among writers to appreciate simplicity and economy, not only in language, but other areas well. Ian Flemming wasn't the only man of letters to wear an Explorer, I know David Mamet is a fan as well. For what that's worth. Cheers, -GW |

I've been writing for living over 25 years, and the actual time I've spent sitting and typing is a tiny portion of my day compared with being "in the field" so to speak. I've always done my own photography 90% of the time as well. It's what you write about that determines your choice of timepiece. When I sit down to write I'm wearing whatever I had on that day, when I could have been doing anything from working on the farm to diving or riding a motorcycle or driving a car I'm reviewing. These days I have a few watches to choose from, but it's always a Rolex or Tudor Oyster (or Pelagos). I've never noticed it when typing, and this includes going all the way back to typewriters. If I was novelist that stayed mostly in my office, I think a DateJust would be it.

Not sure how your chosen profession plays into it too much, although if I were to guess and picture in my mind I would see a writer wearing something with a leather strap

Yes, exactly, Neil...although I concede the point that many (several?) writers would most likely be attracted to something that makes a powerful statement without going "over the top"...which would encompass many different Rolex models, IMO.
