Portuguese Chronograph vs Portuguese Automatic?
Been debating my next watch purchase coming up soon, and I've had my eyes on picking up my first IWC. I currently don't have any dress watches (Speedmaster, ND SubC, and Tudor Pelagos), so wanting something to fill in that niche. That being said, I don't dress up very often as I work from home, so doesn't need to be a full on dress watch. I've seen a couple used Automatics lately that bring the price down to about the price of a new Portuguese Chrono, so I'm trying to decide which one I'd want to go for. Any owners of either one have thoughts to share?

I like the Chrono most of all the IWC models, classy and elegant but with a sports twist.

For me, the IWC Portugieser Chrono is one of the best IWC's ever

Inhouse 7 days movement or ETA Valjoux 7750 makes a difference for many people.

Yeah it's certainly a big step up in movement (and price). I've read that they heavily modify the 7750 though, so it's not quite like just dropping in an ETA movement as is, but certainly still not as impressive as the in house movement in the automatic.

I have the Port. Chrono in blue. It wears big due to little bezel area. Not bonding with it, may flip it. Like my Mark 18 better.

I had the 5001-07 with the blue numbers and really liked it. I wore it on the brown Santoni strap in basically any situation. If I had to do it all over again, I probably would've gotten the 3903 chrono instead.

I prefer the sub dial placement on the auto. I would get the blue dial though. |

Not an owner, but I would go with the Auto. It is more dressy looking if that is what you are going for. Also, since you do not dress up that often the 7 day power reserve would probably come in handy.

Vote for the chrono. Just a really smart and simple piece. Yes, it's probably overpriced and it's not in-house, but it's a good balance of sport and dress. I also think the Auto's just too big.
For value and in-house, I'd strongly look the JLC Master series as well. The MUT Moon is just gorgeous to me. |

I was in the same situation as you. Bought the chrono and didn't regret it at all!

I have the 5007
the movement is just superb. chrono is nice but if you compare them side to side there is no match (IMHO) |

Im a big fan of the 5007 and love mine. I much prefer it over the port chronograph you’ve pictured. I really like the IWC yacht club if you want to go with a chronograph.

Thanks everyone for the feedback - it seems to be split pretty evenly between the two, but maybe the Chrono has the edge. Will have to try them on side by side to really help determine I think. I've only tried on the chrono so far, so I know how that feels/looks on me.

I try some watches on for years before I pull the trigger. Don’t rush it. I’ve bought on impulse and soon realize that I am not bonding with the watch.

Sometimes I poll the staff at a dealer to see which watch looks better. I know they are trying to sell you a watch, but if you say which one do you like, the workers often know what they are talking about. Just be ready if they all like the tourbillion, they are messing with you.

Had both and prefer the 3714. The 7 Day Auto has the better movement but it is way too thick for a watch that style. Wrist shots for reference.

This was my choice, that being said, if you’re looking for a dress watch it doesn’t fit under every sleeve...

I really like the Automatic but it's quite thick...
But I also love the Chrono, which is why I got it. It does certainly wear larger because of the lack of bezel but wears very comfortably on my 6.5" wrist. |

I prefer the chrono’s looks, but bought the Auto for the movement. Now that the chrono has an in house movement though, i may switch it up.
