Tudor Pelagos or vintage Rolex
I have $3000. to spend and need YOUR horological expertise. I could buy a 2 year old Tudor Pelagos or a Rolex date wrist watch from online sources. What do you folks think I should buy and why? A part of me is telling me to choose the Tudor with the latest technology or should I choose an iconic Rolex date. Help!!!

Depends on what you want a sport watch or a dress watch. I’d pick pelagos but I like sport watches.

Pelagos is titanium, very light, but not shiny like stainless.
Its chalk and cheese, modern diving v. vintage dress. I like dive watches, and the vintage date will be 36mm or smaller, so my choice would be Pelagos. Pelagos has amazing lume too, but your vintage will have none.

Between those 2 the Pelagos, but depends on your collection and lifestyle... 2 very different watches...

Modern movement with a monster power reserve, it also has the jr glidelock adjustable clasp, which is awesome. |

Pelagos all the way. With $3K to spend you wont find a very nice Datejust reference anyway IMO. Honestly even if I had $6K to spend I would choose the Pelagos, it's a great looking watch.

I was recently in this very same dilemma. I survived a widow maker heart attack in 2011 that absolutely changed life as I knew it. I was 40 years old and struggled to do the most basic activities. I got a little better in time but the damage was done, thankfully I had bought something that I was able to liquidate, unlike other things I had like vehicles that the bottom drops out of.
I have been very blessed to have survived a situation that honestly I wasn’t expected to live through, my priorities have been what I like to think of as “right sized” instead of how I initially felt like I had been forced into downsizing. So when the time came that I could once again buy a nice watch I decided to do something that I’m not known to do .... I spent less than what I had budgeted for. Since I can no longer tear it up on my jet ski and skydive I decided I didn’t need a SS sports piece and posted a WTB ad for a Datejust and was contacted by a gentleman selling his lightly worn 16014 purchased new by his father in 1990, the same year that I enlisted in the Army. I could have purchased a new Datejust, it’s not what I wanted. I love the old lug hole case watches. For me at this point in life it was the perfect choice. I love this forum and this hobby because it allows all of us to enjoy what we enjoy in whatever way we all want .... more or less or something in between. Get the newest watch. Rolex is known for their quality but you need to understand that if this is going to be your daily beater you definetely be on the safer side with a new and modern mechanical piece.
Many vintage watches are worn beyond worthing repairing. The advice from the service center will be to use it as it is until it stops ticking. the main reason is that folks can marginally afford the watch but then they do not service them properly or at all. The new Tudor(s) are fantastic pieces, of course they don't have a crown in the dial but they are still part of the family. Also, why aren't you considering any version of the BB? The Pelagos and the Datejust are totally different watches, a nice BB 58 could represent both, a classic inspired look (Sub) with a modern in-house movement... just my 2 cents. Ps. I have my father's Rado Diastar (the original, in Tungsten), that watch is vintage (as I am) and to be honest I barely wear it because a 40+ year movement will be fragile, like it or not :) |
