Should I pay over retail?

If I have the chance to purchase the blue dial Sky D, should I just bite it and pay over retail?

Only you can decide the worth . . . Most would say “No! Never”. Others will say “follow your heart”.

At the end . . You decide.

But if you are looking for opinions, DOnt do IT.

It is very much an individual question — I have been very fortunate in being able to get the references I want — including the highly desired ones - as well as been collecting for many many years — so I know - to me — it’s just not worth a premium.

Once the newness wears off - as it ALWAYS does — they all end up locked away and the same few tend to get worn - with an exception from time to time.

So you really have to be comfortable with it now — and certainly be prepared to be comfortable with it later — if (when) the market normalizes.

Just my .02

Good luck!!!

The production/distribution of this watch is not going to speed up anytime soon, and the demand isn't going down either. As we near the Holidays and Rolex stops shipping altogether, it's going to get worse.
If you want the watch sooner than later and can justify paying over sticker to wear it, I'd say go for it. Unless you're high up on a wait list somewhere...

Absolutely.

Why wait?

Do you need the money? If so, then no. But then again, you should not be looking watches in the price range if you need the money.

Is it principal? Does principal put a super hard to get watch on your wrist?

Would you prefer to wait years?

Why wait? To me, makes no sense. If I wanted this watch, I would pay over in a heartbeat.

ive heard this a few times now. Am i missing something as i have never heard that before until the last few weeks. AFAIK they have a summer holiday the same as most of the swiss watch industry so deliveries could dry up then, but why would they stop shipping watches in november/december?

Curious myself . . What’s the reason for lack of options towards the end of the year? I’m sure there is a thread somewhere on the topic.

that would imply they are diverting significant production capacity to watches that 6 months after basel still have not hit AD's in hardly any quantity

I understand they have to make new release watches, but making close to a million per year of all varieties i cant imagine they only make them 9 or 10 months a year. And stopping deliveries for a few months would mean just that.

If it is $10, sure. Go ahead.

But seriously, maybe.... up to $500 is the most I would pay.

It's arguably the most complicated new Rolex offering and with that blue dial and low price is extremely popular so I would imagine it will stay over retail if only because of that blue dial

NOPE u are just feeding the craze. Plus on principle alone, do it the old fashion way, wait in line. IMO

I have to agree with Seth, few reasons why.

1. It’s not a LVc or a BLNR, or even a Daytona for that matter. We have seen very few incomings of the blue dial SkyD. So maybe holding out for a year or two still may not work out....

2. If you have the money and value the actual experience of owning the watch and wanting it on your wrist to enjoy and appreciate what it does, then why not pay over for it?

3. As cheesy as it sounds. Who knows what tomorrow may bring? Like I said above if you have the money and want to get the watch......what are you waiting for?

My 2 pence!

Depends on how much over retail? As long as it’s in line with the market, preferably less, I would do it. I did with my Daytona. Absolutely no regrets

Do what you feel you must do. Just be aware that paying over retail is fueling the current flipping/speculation that is making it very hard to get certain watches.

I was recently having this discussion with a serious collector friend of mine.

I have typically resided in the "no way Jose would I pay more than MSRP" camp. I have out of principal never paid more than retail for any watch and often hold out for getting a price more favorable. I however also been waiting for what seems like a lifetime for a few highly allocated pieces (SS Daytona, SS BLRO, PP 5711/1A, etc, etc, etc.).

My collector friend has also been in the same camp as me but his more recent thinking is different. He is very loyal to a few key ADs. He pays retail on watches he could easily get at a discount in order to be a "high value" customer and get first dibs on the really hard to get stuff. He too has been on many lists for many watches however he gets them and a lot faster than anyone else I know. More importantly he's purchased many watches from his ADs that he's not really wanted or worn in order to be at the top (or near the top) of the lists. This has resulted in him laying out 5-6 figures in cash and in the end he has had to wait for many of his highly sought after pieces like everyone else (but a lot less than us mortals).

His revised position is that he could have saved a significant amount of time and money by not being "loyal" to his ADs and putting that money (likely less) to buying grey/at a premium without having to wait and getting the watch he really wanted much faster.

Put that way I suppose it's hard to argue with that logic as you save money, time and get what you want when you want. All that being said I still have yet to pay the premium despite knowing that I could have any of my grail watches today if I was willing to pay up. I'm a patient guy by nature and the hunt/wait is part of the experience for me so my long answer to your very short and direct question is "no" I would not pay the premium.
