x2: As much as i love the the SubC ( great great watch), these are a bit similar: why not take a breath for a few moments: there are so many other great option.. Personally i would take a look at the new explorer two, or the yeach master to get some contrast. If you should ask me: i wait, enloy the search ....( and buy a low profile explorer 1 in the end )

Then you chose for the right reasons For me, the SubC is a major disappointment, Rolex could have done so much better with it

So long as you don't have to fund it by selling a kidney, go for it.
Then again, you can survive perfectly well with the other remaining kidney.... Seriously though, irrespective of peoples opinion on the sub c (I happen to like it), if you like it and circumstances allow, why not make yourself happy? |

Maybe the LVc will provide you with a bit more difference from the GMTIIc? Anyway, good luck! This is only the beginning........

This was my situation. Even if I had neither and wanted both, I'd get the Sub in SS and the GMT in TT. My own personal reasoning is that even though I think either look good in TT, I prefer brushed center links on SS models. Since the SS GMT comes with PCL's anyway it seemed the more logical choice for two tone. That way my SS watch (Sub) has brushed. I think also the GMT by its nature and function lends itself a little better to being dressed up a bit - think pilot or traveling first class New York to Paris versus banging a Submariner on a coral reef or the narrow confines of a shipwreck.

I'd keep the GMT IIC and pick up a LV or a vintage sub matte dial to satisfy your sub itch.

I think the number one priority for a diver's watch should be legibility, and the Sub C isn't the easiest because of all the shininess on it - gloss bezel, gloss dial and an untreated sapphire crystal makes it difficult to read at times. At the same time as making it more jewel-like, they've made it less elegant with the squared off case. It works on the GMT IIc (I think the polished centre links breaks up the blockiness a bit), but that had a more comprehensive design change than the Sub - on the Sub, it just looks like an afterthought. Then they're running a 20 year old movement that is hardly on the cutting edge, and not as robust as people think I just think the whole exercise was one purely motivated by making money rather than making the best watch they could. I think the Submariner name has been sullied by it - if you want to see a great current diver's watch, take a look at the Tudor Pelagos. That's the watch the Sub-C should have been. Just imagine, same watch with a Rolex handset, dial and next-generation movement, it would still sell in massive numbers, but nothing else on the market would touch it. I just look at the Sub and see what might have been Chris |

Or, radical thought, be happy with what you have.

There are other aspects where the movement could be improved. The escapement uses a Swiss lever escapement which is solid, but not overly efficient (and, again, heavily dependent on proper lubrication) - perhaps Rolex should be looking at alternative solutions. The power reserve isn't anything to write home about, despite (again) the Yacht-Master II, Daytona and Sky-Dweller having much better power reserves. Maybe a multi-barrel option could be a good idea, it's something quite a few other brands use to good effect, and helps to distribute the power into the movement more consistently (a single barrel mainspring peaks and troughs at the top and bottom of its power reserve, which impacts on timekeeping). Basically what it boils down to is that the cal. 3135 is a 20 year old design, and watchmaking has moved on - isn't it about time they put the old workhorse out to stud and came up with something better? Without and regard for the money side of the equation, just the logic. I would either get rid of the GMT and get the subc or keep the GMT and get a DJ2. I do not know as much about the fine details of the construction of the watches, but agree with both trains of thought. Turning the sub into a real tool, no bling piece would be suicide on the sales and Rolex makes HUGE money on the service of all of these pieces. But if you have the technology, why not incorporate it? It is not like they haven't raised the prices enough to justify it???

I don't think toning down the shininess would take away any of the beauty of the watch. I don't think that aspect will age well, neither will the blocky case. I think this Sub will end up being one of those watches where we'll all wonder what on earth Rolex were thinking with the design. I don't doubt for a moment it'll sell loads, but I don't think it'll ever be one that will be loved 20 years down the line |
