Platona + 15202OR for 5370P (black)??

I have the opportunity to trade my Platona and APRO for a black, never-worn, 2020 5370P. I would have to add a bit of cash, but not crazy.

I’ve enjoyed both of my watches, but the current climate makes a RG full bracelet more than I want to wear regularly. While I’ve loved the Daytona, it’s just another metal vs steel, and the movement is no comparison to the 5370.

What’s your opinion?

Im no watch expert so can't make any suggestions about the trade, but what makes you feel uncomfortable about the full gold bracelet on the AP?

When you say "current climate" do you mean it's a hot summer, or by climate you mean the level of crime in your area. Please be clear.

I'm a Patek fan (own a 5167) and I owned a Platona and an AP (both sold). But I would not do this trade unless you really want a dressy watch over some dressy sports watches.

To reiterate above, are you comfortable wearing a leather strap ‘dressier’ watch consistently? As you’re giving up two metal bracelet sport watches. Only mention as this could be a *very* costly mistake if you decide it’s not for you.

All in all though, the OR Jumbos are some of my favorite watches so I’d never do this trade.

If I didnt know the prices (and actually I don’t), I wouldn’t even do PM jumbo in a straight 1:1 trade for atheistic reasons alone.

I wouldn't do this trade.

If anything I would have expected an even trade or a small amount of cash your way. I am not fully up to speed on prices but I do remember EWC have an unworn 5370P at 239k.

What I might do personally instead is get a Platona with diamonds and a steel Jumbo plus some cash your way.

Only if you love the 5370p above all else as you are losing two great watches.

I love the platona and the AP

But if you are a fan of Patek the 5370p to me is the best of modern Patek

Split seconds / enamel dial / breguet numerals - it’s a fantastic piece

If you have another sports watch you can’t go wrong with this one IMHO

Thanks! It’s good to have the opinion of an owner.

This would leave a YG DD36, Plat DD40, AP Diver, Blancpain FF OC3 (40mm) for sports. The rest would be Patek complications and an ALS Perpetual.

Current market is around $100k on the Platona and $120k or so on the gold jumbo. Real transacting prices, not Chrono24 list price.

I bought both of mine at a significant discount from retail before all the craziness.

But I thought you planned to trade - so those prices are too high.

If you get a straight trade for the PP, then do it if you are tired of the others. The cash values won’t be what you hope for methinks.

The trade values are dipping - I wouldn’t judge from retail values you see on eBay completed listings.

I already have an agreed trade that values them (as trade) in that range. The numbers/valuation part will all work out fine. I’ll almost double what I have into the Daytona, and triple what I have into the AP.

Of course, if I hate the 5370P, that will be a much tougher piece to sell/trade, but my intent isn’t to flip or profit. I just want to re-align my collection toward my current wearing interests.

I’m not trading away my whole collection. Will still have plenty of options to wear, both on strap and on bracelet.

I don’t think I’ll want the jumbo back, but if I want a Daytona, I can get steel or white gold. Prices getting lower every day.

I would

- keep the Platona... especially if you have your name on the card. (Next year is an anniversary year, so we may see some shakeup of the models.)
- Sell the AP.
- Put my name on the 5370P-011 list at PP (The current blue enamel is superb and catches the light amazingly. The strap ruins everything so it requires some search on google to find better combination pictures).

If you still want to purchase the 5370P, check carefully the dial there is no (micro) crack as it is enamel.

From a pure watchmaking standpoint it's a no-brainer to do the trade. A 13k Chrono in a platinum case and a 22.7k royal oak in a gold case to get a quarter million dollar enamel split Patek. If you have other sport watches I'd do it, but those are iconic watches you're trading away.

I would NEVER make this trade. Two of the heavy hitters from AP and Rolex for an unremarkable (but still very lovely) Patek.
And believe me I am a Patek fan boy.

If you are certain you want to do this: id sell now before prices decline more and then request 5370 through your AD. This is not a watch id go used for even with a discount. That’s just me.

I think it's the complete opposite. Patek grand complication division vs a two hander AP and a Daytona. Talk about what's remarkable and unremarkable. Granted the platona and gold jumbo are awesome but if you're a watch nerd the 5370 is next level

I would completely do this trade. The 15202 has never been my favourite and the Daytona is no match for the split second chronograph 5370. And the enamel dial of the 5370 is spectacular. You can always get a Daytona in SS if you want a Daytona down the road.

I would do it. You will not regret it because the platona and the ro can easily be bought at lower prices. But the 5370p is holding its value and it is a rarity.

If you want nice movements, enamel, chrono and dressier.

An alternative would be to go with a superb 5231 (for the enamel) + a classic 5270 (for the caliber + classic PP dial with chrono and moon phases).

So you would have the better of both worlds, you could not be more PP than that and they are maybe easier to resell if ever you need/want to.

Jeez that’s two amazing references which would make it very hard for me to let both go.

If I were in your shoes and already adding cash I’d do a 1 for 1 but buy a 5270. The 5270/1R is my grail of all grails. Just would rather have all the features of the 52 versus the 53. Can’t see the split seconds outweighing all the coolness of the 52.

I love that 15202OR. My choice would be to keep it, but trade in that platona for the 5370P with cash top up.

Exactly. 5270 is is everything you could ever need in a watch.

Thanks for the suggestions. You’re close. ;-) I already have the 5270. While the 5231 is awesome, I already have the 5930, so not looking for another WT right now.
