5172G - blue or salmon?

I am considering picking up a 5172G. Love everything about. I love the blue with the casual calfskin, looks eminently wearable. But the new salmon looks special.

Anyone seen them both in the metal? Is the salmon similar to the opaline 5270P? Which would you go for given the choice?

Honestly all down to personal taste.

I've seen and passed on several salmon / rose opaline dial Patek's because for whatever reason, despite immense history, they don't do it for me. The one everyone will think I'm utterly bonkers was the 5270p. It is an truly incredible pinnacle watch and I'm not interested in values so I would pick the blue dial if I didn't already have one.

But I buy whatever reference I'm interested in, in another colour. For me I would pick blue from the 5172, but I would guess if you polled this, the majority would go for salmon. If you are split, go for salmon, regardless of tastes, I think its very special indeed.

I love salmon dial watches, especially with Patek. However, I am also going to say that blue is my favorite option for this one, but it is all about personal tastes!

if you want to wear the watch, blue. If you want to collect it, salmon.

Really just personal preference. I would prefer blue but just by a hair. Salmon is nice too. Key to salmon dials is to see them in person. Some are redder than others which may or may not suit and photos do not seem to capture salmon as well as other shades due to lighting conditions.

The 5172 is a very very appealing model, especially the whole case thanks to its complexity and finish. The blue 5172 is still traditional but with a well thought casual touch. The Salmon remains much more on the traditional side of the road. This being said, a well chosen strap for the latter can look modern as well.

No, the salmon dial isn't the 5270P/5450 Salmon (more "honey" coloured). It is the 5024G/5320G Salmon which has a touch of rose colour.

I prefer the blue version but that's very personal (I'm not a fan of the darkened elements with Salmon combination).

I don't think the blue "suede" strap can stay nice for long if the watch is worn regularly. They seem to age quickly. I couldn't experience it myself but maybe some owners can chime in after a 1-year experiment?

However, both versions are gorgeous, they are just very different in terms of style (contemporary vs traditional).

My vote is for the blue dial. I prefer other brands salmon (Gronefeld, fpj..)
When it was my time to decide, I didn’t pull the trigger on either of these cause I was (still) obsessed with the 5170, which I prefer for proportion and design.

I have seen both and i do prefer the Blue
there are roomers though that the Salmon could be a very short run and that would make it very desirable in the future

5172G - blue or salmon?

Quite hard in the bright AD light to tel the difference between my 5270P and the new models. Just think the texture looks noticeably smoother, however.

Gorgeous watch for the right skin tone, think that’s the clincher for you

Just seen both and it’s salmon for me but it’s closer than I thought obviously not realistic but one could almost have both watches since they look quite different

Totally agree with that. I've got a photo of the salmon and my buddy's blue and they wear surprisingly different!

It’s so confounded by the strap. I absolutely love the blue calfskin. Hate the alligator, would replace it if I got the watch. Would love to see it on a brown calfskin strap.

I am on the list for the salmon so will go for that however I love the blue as well. Agree the calfskin works well on the blue. Salmon Patek though, I am checking out of this game when mine arrives!

I’d love the salmon if I had a darker complexion. On me, it looks washed out and a little weird.

Salmon dials are no longer rare, so I’d just pick the color you like best without concern to future collectibility. They’re both great.

Blue since I have a lighter complexion. Also, blue is my favorite color of mine.
Buy what you like, but you can't go wrong with both.

Salmon for more dressier appeal.

Blue for more sportier look.

What sources have said the salmon dials in production are a short run?

"What sources have said the salmon dials in production are a short run?"

Yes, I'd be interested to know this too as I'd heard the exact opposite. They're apparently not making any more movements so currently production is split evenly between blue and salmon, there are just half as many of each being made by default. They'll eventually run blue out in favour of just the salmon dial. So buy which colour you prefer but for my money, I recently bought blue because there's a possible cut-off date to being able to purchase these particular models at retail. I just have a thing about not buying any watches grey so they have to be in production in order for me to be able to buy one!

I ended up going with the salmon vs. the blue. I think the salmon is more interesting, and in person, just has this amazing variations in color and tone based on the lighting. Nothing wrong with the blue, it's just a little more staid overall.

Any further context on Patek "not making any more movements"? Is the CH 29-535 PS end-of-lifed at this point? I figured it had a long history ahead of it despite the launch of the 5470P and then new 1/10 second of the movement...

I am very beginner when it comes to Patek, so without any real context I'll just say there are plenty of blue dials around. That salmon dial is one of the most beautiful watches in the world! Salmon, 100%

what is the difference between "wear" and "collect"?
Why would anyone buy a watch for any reason other than they like it, especially at this price point
