Weight loss and wrist size.

October last year, I was at my doctors office weighing 287 pounds, hypertension, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, pre diabetic, my knees, back, and feet hurt regularly. It was strongly advised that I lose weight and get active. My wife and I decided we were going to do it, and ultimately began Feb 14. I stepped on the scale that morning horrified at 297 on the scale. Stepped on it 3 times to confirm.

7 months later, down 75 pounds, 222 on the scale, blood pressure normal, seeing my doctor next month for blood results, knees, back, and feet feel great, and overall looking and feeling so much better. One thing I hadn’t factored in while going through this process was wrist size. Halfway through, I had to remove a link on my DJ41, this morning I had to move the micro adjust in a spot. The Sub went from the glide lock in the center to moved almost all the way in, straps are now in a hole tighter. My 47mm Panerai 1389 now looks a little awkwardly large, and I was able to pull off a 39mm Tudor Black Bay Pro which would had looked too small on my wrist 6 months ago.

At one point, when I started noticing watches get increasingly loose on my wrist, I did a search to see the effect of weight loss on wrist sizes, and didn’t see a lot. So I’ll confirm, I think it went down about a 1/4 inch.

Congrats on the major achievement. Unless you actually go through something like this, most will never know how difficult and how much self discipline it requires.
I noticed my wrist size change with just a 20 pound difference. Last year I used the purchase of a new Rolex as the reward to getting back in military shape. It’s a disciplined lifestyle and you have to work 3X harder to get the same results as you did in your 20’s.

Congrats to you and I understand. After I lost 52 pounds my wrist size went down about 1/2 inch.

It caused me to change my collection due to sizes and weights and I still prefer smaller lighter pieces

Congrats on your transformation. Mine wasn’t as dramatic, high of 184lbs now holding steady around 165, but I too had to tighten the bracelets on a couple of my watches. I am very active but it’s definitely harder to maintain your weight as you get older.

Congratulations on your healthy turn and life expectancy extension, while also reminding us that wrist fat is real and I could stand to lose some too.

Nice work! I'm on a similar journey right now myself. Started at 320 and around 247 right now with my sights on 200lbs.

I had purchased a Black Bay 58 not long before I started, kept all links in place and just set it to the smallest micro adjust and it fit perfect. After the first 30lbs or so I had to pull a link a set it to the largest micro adjust setting. After another 20lbs the middle setting and now, 20 more lbs later I'm back to the smallest micro adjust setting minus a full link from where I started.

I used to need an extra link added to some Rolex models, they didn't fit me stock. Now I'm pretty sure those watches would fit just fine....if only the AD would give me the call for one :)

Wow, thanks for the awesome responses guys! The support is so appreciated!!

For those who asked, the secret started with Nutrisystem. Kept me on a very strict calorie count and portion control. Wasn’t as difficult as I thought it was going to be. Before, my worst habit was eating way too much, and way too many calories way too late. Calories now are down to between 1500-2000 a day, and I spread my eating throughout the day which makes me much less hungry at night. Maintaining it eating more veggies, fish, poultries, and knocked deep fried foods out completely. I set small very accomplishable goals for myself and am so happy with the results. I plan to stick with what I’ve been doing.

Congrats to the others on your weight losses, we know the struggle, and the feeling of accomplishment is unbeatable!

I’ve went a little nuts with watches as I’ve hit benchmarks, and some will be going as a result lol. The DJ41 came right when I began, that was a pleasant unexpected surprise. I had picked up a Sinn U1T which may be going, the Black Bay Pro which is staying, IWC Chrono 41 which is staying, a Black Bay black dial S&G which is going, and a Tag Superdiver with a Tudor movement which is staying.

The big purchase which will mark the weight loss accomplishment, coming up on my 50th birthday, and 30 years of clean and sober living will be an Omega Seamaster Sedna on rubber.

Congrats! I lost some substantial weight 6 years ago and for some reason my wrists were not too changed. More important, like you my numbers all improved. Good luck...

Good for you! I changed up my whole lifestyle September before covid. Changed my whole life - I am in good shape now and 60 pounds lighter. As a result my watches are all 1/2 smaller now :)

Absolutely inspiring OP. Sugars, fast-food are all detrimental to health. Bravo.
