Nah mine isn't the NOS, too rich for my blood. Mine is in great shape but not minty. I'll change the strap to preserve the original as much as I can.

The dilemma now is what to do with the shroud. Since I want to wear the watch in rotation, I'd like to remove the original, save it, and replace it with a nice aluminum shroud (I think they're a challenge to obtain these days).

But removing the original is dangerous. Wearing it is dangerous too. Gotta think this one through.

Removing the stock shroud sucks. They are brittle as hell and might not make it. Personally I would just wear it. If it breaks then get out the glue. It's just a watch.

Yep, you're right. I'll probably keep it on.

I can dig it! I don't have possession yet. It's in the mail and should arrive at my desk today! I will post pics, of course!

My pal from mailroom just handed me the package from Uncle Seiko!

I set the analog and digital time and put on the Uncle Seiko strap GL831 strap. Perfect! True love!

Why is there so much strap gap between the lugs?

It's just the Uncle Seiko GL831 strap, not the OEM. Might be 20mm instead of 22mm. I'll pick up a 22mm when I can.

You should get the gaskets changed out on it.

I wonder why more people don’t buy the genuine Seiko Z22 flat vent strap, nothing against uncle seiko but wouldn’t a genuine Seiko strap be preferable?

Excellent! I think the Uncle Seiko GL831 looks great on the H558, too! I think it's wise to sock away the original strap, too. It's the first thing I did.

The H558 Club is a great thing! Congrats to you, too!

For me, it's mostly that I like to support Uncle Seiko. I have always liked the quality, look, and feel of his straps (I own a waffle strap, too for my Turtle). And he sold me my H558, after all.

I think I've heard that the Bonetto Cinturini flat vent strap is very good, too. I have a BC strap on my Orient Mako I and I think it's really sharp.

To be perfectly honest the strap quality that Uncle Seiko provides is vast superior over the Seiko OEM strap Z22, Now if your talking about the OEM strap that came with these watches i.e Seiko GL831 original straps were awesome and quality is extremely good. And Uncle Seiko (Larry) has perfected the GL831 experience and done so extremely well. They even smell yummy.

You are right it is superior to the Z22.

I personally do not like the original GL straps. They turn into to a gummy mess after wearing it a bit. The other thing is they crack, and when they crack they can fail at any moment.
