Mark Cavendish's RMs stolen in armed heist

As if two broken ribs and a collapsed lung weren't enough, Cav's now been visited by four armed robbers who assaulted him, threatened his wife Peta, terrified his kids and stole two of his RMs.

Don't buy if offered, although the chances of that are almost nil I guess.

Poor guy. Top sprinter and a great bloke.

Seems VERY high theft rate for those who own RM timepieces. Are the UK police sure this isn't an inside job?

RM buyers and sponsors beware!

Cav’s one of my all time hero’s, I was appalled to read what he and his family were put through. I hope they catch the buggers quickly!

An inside job? Not sure what you mean. He was at home with the wife and kids and was assaulted.

It's no secret he's into RM; he wears them in races.

There’s one watch brand for which I won’t be getting mugged. If you like them, enjoy them.

He got all the bad luck :(

Hope he will recover soon.

He is a RM ambassador, right?

For as few pieces RM claims to make, it seems theft rate is extremely high. Make of that what you will.

I had never heard of him before this post, but it sounds like a terrible ordeal.

I am originally from the UK, but have been in Russia for the last 15 years. As strange it might sound, I am honestly quite worried about even visiting London, let alone moving back.

For sure there is some crime here, but at least in the last 10 years or so I do not remember hearing of any incidents of violent crime / robbery of anyone I know and certainly I have never thought twice about what I put on my wrist.

I don’t know what has happened to the UK, but it is quite worrying. Poor guy cannot even feel safe in his own home.

After Eddy Merckx and Lance Armstrong, he's probably the most famous living cyclist, but his name recognition lies way below those two, but above Wiggo, Sagan, Roglic and all the rest. Cav's tied with Merckx in winning the most stages of the Tour de France.

The UK is still a safe country, relative to much of the world. Parts of London, Manchester, any big city, you obviously want to take care in certain areas at night, but unless you're a big name wearing multiple £1 million watches or whatever these things are worth, you're pretty safe. That's what the statistics say, but of course anecdotal stories and the sensational front pages will suggest otherwise. Where I live, a small town in the north-west, you can leave your front door open all day and nothing untoward will happen. Apart from the storm that ripped through the place a few weeks ago, toppling trees, leaving many without power and killing three people, the biggest news in the last month is the turning on of the Xmas lights. I'd imagine this is the same all over the country. We're mostly a timid, courteous, unarmed bunch of people.

For sure my having not heard of him is entirely down to my lack of knowledge of professional cycling. He definitely seems to be at the top of the sport. Very sad that a person in his position can’t live a public life without being targeted by such an attack.

Certainly the problems are most apparent in London and other major cities and often overplayed by sensationalist media, but it does seem like the general consensus is that wearing a Rolex around certain otherwise civilised areas of central London is not recommended.

Thinking twice about where you wear a £1m watch makes sense wherever you live in the world, but it is a bit of a concern to have to also worry about wearing a mass produced steel dive watch as a daily.

That said, of course it is much harder to tell from the outside and I am sure you have a much clearer view than I do of the real state of play.

An “inside job” comes in many forms.

For example, robbers may have been connected to home service providers ranging from pest control, housekeeping, landscapers, past contractors, etc.

It wouldn’t necessarily mean a friend or family member.

I would imagine these robberies are done to order. I.e. Mr X wants timepiece Y and the crooks go out and rob one for him. The irony is that Mr X probably pays retail price!

The two RM watches in question are pictured at the bottom of this link, if you scroll past the CCTV shots of the gang.

Exactly, or it could be someone from a company that knows the watches quite well and who can easily liquidate them. The one thing we do know, if you happen to have an RM watch, it now seems you're a BIG target.

I quite like his one. Hers, not so much.

Ongar, of course, is home not only to Cav but was also the HQ of the much-missed anarchist band Crass, who'd have absolutely lapped up a forum such as this one. Can't imagine they'll have been much mentioned on these boards.

It is a horrible ordeal for the family to have to go through, and scary to think how far the burglars would go. But it’s equally concerning because that whole production was over those particular RM references?! Perhaps they were betting on more, and granted RMs are all high priced pieces, but these particular RM references are not exactly amongst the most coveted (which is all relative of course).

Really horrible. I hope he heals quickly and makes another appearance at the tour next summer. He’s a real class act.
