The Black is timeless. The Turquoise is a fad color (yet still beautiful).

I don't think it's an apple: oranges comparison. I think it's more like apples: chairs - they really are far different.

Obviously it’s all down to personal taste but to me there is no question it would be the Explorer. It’s a far classier watch that suits just about every occasion and could last in your collection your whole life. The style is elegant and iconic and it simply looks great.

The OP is a fun color but to my mind more of a fashion watch than a serious one. If it’s meant to be your main watch, it would not be nearly as versatile as the Explorer, which dresses down fine but equally looks great for work and with a suit. So I would (personally) start with an Explorer or a Sub as the core of your collection and then get something more casual/fun down the line as an alternative if you still want something with a dash of color.

Owned the Exp twice in the past, awesome everyday watch that can be worn with mostly anything.

The OP on the other hand is a great sporty watch, I don't think it would work as an only watch.

If you have more watches I would go for the OP, I really like it. As an only watch, the Exp works better.

Define iconic, as OP officially debuted in 1931, Explorer much later...

Back to advise, if you want color, choose OP, otherwise Explorer is a fine watch.

Thanks for everyone’s thoughts! Now the waiting game begins. How long should I expect to wait for an explorer 1

For me the only advantage of the OP over the Explorer is the power reserve.

Well, Explorer was born in 1953 immediately after Hillary used a Rolex on his Everest summit climb. Whereas OP existed long before, arguably the Explorer is more iconic, as it was built in honor of this event. Perhaps not for you.
Also, there is a chance Rolex will create a 41 mm version, so acquiring a 39 mm one while possible may be a good idea.

I could be very wrong, but colors may be a temporary fashion trend

I tried two OP41s, bright blue and yellow. A work colleague wears the Explorer. I prefer the latter but none appeal to me enough to want them on my wrist. The OP41s didn't feel special and the Explorer looks a little bit underwhelming to me. I would personally explore other options (no pun intended).

Hillary used a Smiths, not a Rolex.

You would never go wrong by buying the watch you want. You don’t need the validation of others.

Explorer 1 for me. The Turquoise would be fun for about 3 days.

Two completely different watches, which is better an apple or an orange?
To me the OPs are what I call Fun watches with their bright new colors, great for the beach and other daytime ventures of the sort. The Exp1 is a more serious watch to me and a bit more versatile. If you have other watches the OP can be a Fun addition if not I would go with the Explorer, movement and all that stuff aside.

I'm thinking about the Yellow OP41 but have not seen one in person yet(or any OP for that matter) and in fact when I went to the Boutique in the Design District here in Miami I couldn't even get in the store! A nice sales women cracked the door open slightly to tell me it was by appointment only even though there was just one person in the entire store and the entire design district was a ghost town. So as a bid her good day I thought to myself so I now have to make an appointment to see empty cases and to be told No.

You mean LVMH blue.

I would always go for the Explorer but if you did go for the OP41 and fell out of love with the dial colour in the future you could always get the dial changed to a more conservative one a few years down the line when you send it in to Rolex for a service.

Despite I really like the turquoise dial I would take the classic EX.

This coming from someone whom has the turquoise OP41 and isn't excited in the least by the explorer, in your scenario, I'd pick the explorer. I love my OP, it's gorgeous, but I don't know how it'd do as an only. If you're going to start a collection in short order, then I'd get choose it in a heartbeat...but in a vacuum, all alone, I just don't know if that's the watch. I'd second the submariner mentioned earlier or throw in a black/white OP 39 as an only.
