Icon20 1940s Vintage Watch Advice

I have a 1940s manual movement wrist watch that my Grandfather left for me many years ago. There are no company markings on the face, just that it’s a swiss movement. The case is 18K Gold, and it has a Venus movement as determined by a watchmaker. I recently had it appraised by a reputable jeweller (a local Rolex AD) and its replacement value is around $3000 USD.

I’m interested in selling it but have never sold a watch before. I’m looking for advice on how I would go about doing so to get the most value out of it. I’d prefer to have the money to buy something I’d actually wear in the future.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Replacement value is what it would cost you to buy another similar watch, it is not the actual value of your watch.

If there is no market for a product, such as your watch could be, then it's market value is near zero. Naturally, there is almost always somebody willing to buy a priced-right watch.

TRF is not really a sales site, although we do allow Pledge Members to sell their watches on the proper Boards. Sales, or attempts to sell, outside of these boards are removed.

Actual research on your particular watches market value would help you to be able to know it's true sales value. This may be considerably less than a Dealers replacement value. Once you have this, and you meet the Forum requirements you can put an ad together in the proper place.

Hold onto it, you may change your mind later. I have a 1940s Omega that I thought was way too small. I recently put it on and I realized that every watch I now have is too large, ha ha.

Even 38mm dress watches seem large now.

I'm rethinking my future purchases. Now a 36mm DateJust seems to make more sense.

Keep it. It should be a memento of your grandfather. Not replaceable.
