I love mine and it’s probably going to be my only Rolex in a future small collection but I definitely see the appeal of the sun and explorer II and could easily have purchased those as my Rolex.

I don’t know about necessary, but I am a big fan of mine.

I ditched my 14060m and kept my 214270 MkII and don’t regret the decision at all.

Really comfortable and legible watch, so I’m happy with it. To each their own.

Nope, it is a very niche piece IMO. For 99% of Rolex owners, including collectors, there is at a minimum, a small degree of vanity in our shared hobby. To many, the Exp (1 at least), is either boring or dull. It has no Rolex flair. This makes it a bit more unpopular than other Rolex options.

For me personally, this is the exact reason it is my only Rolex at this point.

I would think that most serious collectors would have little to no use for exp1.

The Exp2 on other hand… whole diff story.

I have an explorer 39 mk 1 and a five digit bluesy. They pair well together and balance each other. Although I must say I do wear the bluesy more often.

I like my 124270 and wear it daily. Simple, durable, and fit for purpose. I choose to wear a time only watch because that is all I require. Others may require more so it would not be the watch for them. Nothing is going to appeal to everyone but the Explorer has a lot more going for it than some might realize. For me it is Rolex distilled down to what makes/made Rolex great.

I always get a little chuckle when people argue one Rolex is more boring or bland than another. I respect the product and the brand but would never look to them for watchmaking excitement. With a few exceptions; conservative is kind of their religion.

Not “necessary”, but it certainly gets the most wrist time of any in my collection. Comfortable, easy to wear, legible, and flies under the radar for those who don’t know.

I’ve never sought the Explorer but now that I own an OP41 I “get it” much better. Both are simple three hand watches that tell time and are under the radar as far as Rolex goes.
