The pelagos, while excellent in many respects, does not look like a $4000 watch to the average Joe

I prefer it that way

If you can pick up an Aquatimer for that sort of money, its a great watch. Otherwise Tudor as others have suggested is obviously a strong choice. Omega Seamaster is also a safe bet !

If not, this could be a waste of effort and money.

$3500.00 in the luxury watch scene is almost insignificant, but in the real world it is a useful sum of money...
I agree. His mom and I have also had this discussion.

Does it have to be BNIB? There are some awesome pre-loved watches in incredible condition out there in the wild. Box, papers.........you name it.

Even buying BNIB , once he puts it on - it´s used.

Yeah...I would 100% pass on that idea if he isn't a watch guy...

Not worth the effort in any way if it won't be appreciated. I know that sounds kinda grinchy, but buying things for other people that are out of their circle of interests usually leads to disappointment in terms of gratitude expressed and un -needed friction.

In other words, spend the money on what he might want or need...

The black Pelagos is a great all around watch, I'd go with that.

with a $1000 budget, there are great Prospex divers with sapphire crystals and their mid-range 6R15 movement

44 mm and built like a tank

My vote is for the Omega Seamaster 300 Master Coaxial, I am 6'6 280lbs and on the wrist it looks bigger than a Submariner(probably because crystal is bigger) and only slightly smaller than my SD43. It looks great and wears comfortably. Works for the liking water part, a bit over the proposed budget though.

Either a Planet Ocean or a Speedmaster Moon would be a good choice.
