Who has consolidated their collection for their grail? Was it worth it?

Did you end up regretting the ability to have many great pieces for one or a few incredible pieces?

I've gone through just about every possible permutation with consolidating or adding to the collection.

In the end I've decided there's no grail. There's just watches I want to own.

That's my fear that there is no real grail, just the next watch that is out of your price range...

no. I never want my grail. Unattainable is sort of the point because if i got it im 100% sure i would be disappointed eventually, and it puts an end point to a collection rather than it being an evolution.

So do you have an actual grail that you won't buy or do you not let yourself assign grail status to a certain watch?

sure i have a grail (a few) but they are all way, way into the mid six figures. So there is really no way thats happening and i don't really want it to either. In my mind its the pinnacle of what i would want, not what i will have.

If i won the lottery id probably buy them. And be mad that i did because they wouldn't be perfect

Wanting is sometimes better than having.
Have and there is nothing to want. ..etc.

I consolidated, not to get to a grail, but to try and tame this beast we call a hobby.

It does feel good to have little choice again, like the good old days.

7 SS to 2 PM

At one time I had 7 SS Rolexes.......decided to consolidate......3 yrs later I just have a WG Sub and a WG BLRO.....to me....best decision I ever made as 7 was too much to decide and none were getting quality wearing time....only think left for me is to:

1) possibly change my BLRO to the blue dial
2) buy the Platona

Do what sings to you!

I’m on the cusp of a 3 into 1 trade. We will see if there’s regret

That's a tough one. I've had what I thought were some of my grails and ended up flipping for other things.. I think the hunt is better than actually owning them sometimes...

I think we have some great answers in this thread.

I think it's only human to want what we don't have.

Above pretty much sums up my feelings at this point but rarely do I regret selling my two datejusts for my grail AP which I recently purchased.

Would agree about grails. Once you own it, it doesn’t feel like a grail. I do have favorites though.

At one point had 12. Consolidated for the "grail" plus I kept a couple others. Once I had it, I was somewhat afraid to wear it--I do not start is it safe threads, I wear my watches for everything, but my grail was a mint vintage gilt Sub and I just had a hard time wearing like I do my other watches. Eventually I sold it.

Best part of the process was I reduced the size of my collection. 12 was way too many. Some hardly got any wrist time. Plus paying insurance premiums on a collection that size is crazy. Learned there really is no grail for me. I just like Rolex and my tastes changes from time to time and I can move watches or buy new ones, but no more grails.

So true and when you think about it, shows what a sickness we have. You get what you want and then you immediately want something else? Insane.

Have consolidated

I clearly have more watches than I can wear.
Last year, I sold three watches to buy a Patek Calatrava.
This year, I sold two watches to get a Rolex Bluesy.
So net down three watches.
I would rather have less watches and better watches at this stage.

Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing a few items on your grail list? I follow your IG page so I am pretty familiar with your current collection. Would just love to know what are grails for you since a few pieces in your current collection (like the 5712 and 5524) are grails for me

This is where I am at. I have sold a couple to justify another and it really feels good. I suspect I will do it again soon when another one I am chasing comes available.

I had a grail but owning it doesn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying my other pieces. Yes the grail feels even more special but the other pieces are very satisfying in their own right. I would never sell part of my collection for a single watch, I would regret it, I'm sure.

I am decades in this hobby. To pine for a new watch is part of this hobby. Being content with the ultimate "grail watch" is fairy tail and a trap.

I feel way beyond satisfied with what I have. In fact, the three Rolex watches I have is probably two too many. I have achieved my personal grail with a DJ41, Subc date, and a BLNR. I’m 99.9% sure I’ll never purchase another watch. For me, a more expensive Rolex or PP doesn’t equal better. I’m having trouble figuring out how to rotate my watches and therefore considering giving one to my dad so he can enjoy it and someday my son can say he’s wearing a watch that was worn by his grandfather and father.

I’m going to probably use bubble pricing to get something I would otherwise never consider. To be fair I was pretty set with my collection for a while

Agreed

A true grail is unobtainable and yes I have sold many pieces that I was not wearing.

Even if I won the lottery there isn’t another watch I want to own.
