I agree, in person it's nicer than I imagined. I was just referring to Patek's allocation philosophy.

Right, but the weakening market has affected Patek as much as anyone (other than Rolex, it seems). They have tightened up production in general and have started to trickle out some references to suit the demand, rather than produce watches to "hit" a preconceived production number. They are also discontinuing models quicker than before in order to help keep stock low and secondary prices strong. The 5270 non-chin was a very quick reference. As was the 5170G black dial. Two years for a bread and butter white gold chrono model is very quick.

The 5524 has it's fans of course, and it's nice watch (other than the pushers).

Here we go down "how many 5131's produce a year"????? One side saying restricting production as its a weaker seller. Maybe we can have some facts other than chrono 24 and here are some:

A). My AD has a waiting list of 6 people. The one in Kuwait (15) and Dubai stopped at 20
B). The model was initially intended to be devisive. TS himself stated he wanted 50% to love it....I am sure everyone understands you don't produce a watch case when you need it and that production runs take place maximum on an annual basis. This case was a small production run due to the uncertainty of its success which my sources state were UNDERESTIMATED....
C). Due to its success the production is limited by cases in stock and once the cases are set for their next production run we can expect this to be increased
D). Move the prices on chrono down to retail and then we can see how many would be available. The premiums asked are huge
D). If they don't sell why would 2 TRF Trusted Sellers have contacted me in the last 3 months wanting to buy mine.
E). Yes the pushers could have been a bit shorter
F). At what volume is a watch considered a slow seller? I can't think of a person with a gondola or an ellipse

So somewhere between the two views lies the fact.

As for the point of the thread I think 5170P is great and I hope more people are put off by the diamonds. I can just imagine what they look like in reality. Yes I prefer breguet but it's still a nice dial

I see.
Would be nice to have more information about production from Patek

I I don't mind the pushers in person, I found them to be an interesting detail that would be concealed by the shirt cuff until needed. Also found the pushers quite satisfying in feel during actuation and thought the the quarterturn locking was a great detail.

It grew on me to the point that it is among my favorite pieces in the patek line up.

Only criticism I have is its practicality as a travel watch. Though the WR is reasonable, the watch is mounted on leather... so while I'm wearing it by the pool I just needs remember to leave it off while I have a swim.

"I'll just leave it here on the poolside lounge chair or maybe on the blanket in the sand... what could go wrong?"

Practicality is a good point. I guess it's a pilot watch for when the pilot is chilling in the lounge, not the pool. I do think if they made it in steel and priced it at 40k it would probably help. But either way the design was so derivative that it would turn off many collectors anyways.

If Patek only produced the 5170P for 1 year (like they did with the 5070P), would interest in this watch skyrocket, despite the diamond baguettes?

Diamond hour markers on a platinum Patek is not new. The 3970P, 5971P, 5961P and several other references came with diamond hour markers.

The watch is a beauty, I believe it will perform well in the long run.

Personally the diamonds are a disappointment but perhaps there may be a steel model in 2018?

In my imagination it would be this:

5170A
Tachometer scale and hands like the P
Arabic numbers like the 5070 (maybe just 12 & 6)
Anthracite/gray dial.

30 pieces made

A shame I won't be on the list.

Pa the way the outer scale in the dial has been redone to allow more room for the subdials is absolutely perfect. This model has truly sorted out the dial layout.

So, just to dream a little, how much would it cost to have Patek make a special one-off of this with platinum batons instead of diamonds? That would be my grail watch. In reality the change should cost very little in terms of material and work. So, how much would they charge
a) In case you were an Eric Clapton type collector, or
b) In case you were a nobody (like me )

you guys find it sexy or a design flaw the subsecond indices on the 5170 dial?
a member at WPS had a remark that the subsecond indices on 5170 are correct for a 18000bph movement but wrong for the 28800 where it should be 3 ticks between every second.i kinda feel it charming ,
what do you think

Diamond markers on a man's Patek seems a bit odd to me but I still like them.

Been thinking of asking my AD to try and secure this watch for me as I would love to add something a bit rare to my little collection as a special occasions only watch. I think this watch looks incredible and I love the chronograph and the view of the movement.

The dial and case are perfection, but I must admit I am concerned about the diamond markers, if they might not age well - what do you think? I think it looks good at first, but after a bit of wrist time will they get old fast? I'm not sure... even though it looks nice in the photo.

I've seen this watch in person as Baselworld and the piece is spectacular. The diamond markers are ever so subtle. Can hardly tell it's diamonds. I much prefer this over the numerals.

Thanks Socal. I put down my name on the list for it today, they think it will be late this year or maybe next year. I'm not in much of a rush but will be very pleased to acquire it.

I will also view in June in person just to be sure.

Not a huge diamond fan but a friend saw it in real and said they are really well made, look like usual markers if you don't inspect the watch close up, probably a good deal for those who love the 5170

Most beautiful model out there.
Not a diamond chap, but when they're baton shaped and you don't realise they're diamonds...
