Look what the cat dragged in! INCOMING

The funny thing is that this watch (5231G) was never on my radar, I thought it a tad too dressy for me. A couple weeks back I get a call from my AD where they told me they have a special watch coming that I should have a look at. As a side note, my AD doesn't automatically allocate special watches, but rather gives the collector community a chance to look at these rare birds before they make a determination as whos home the watch goes to.

I go in with no expectation other than the excitement of seeing a unicorn in the flesh. I see it in the metal and fall in love. . .hard. I am of south east Asian decent, so the map strikes a chord with me. A certain pride overwhelms me, where on this tiny cloisonne enamel map I can show my kids their direct lineage. This is where the cheesy tag line rang home, you never actually own a Patek. . .

I go down a rabbit hole to learn as much as I can about the watch, the history of the complication, the enameling process and how these dials are super rare to produce (there are only two artisans who work with Patek, and one of them is in their 70s). It's pretty cool, you get a Rare Handcrafts certificate of authenticity, where it notes that they are "keeping alive precious techniques that would otherwise become extinct."

The watch in white metal and on a matte gator strap brings it down to a more casual affair, and complements my daily dress. I also love that it is under the radar, where I would be less conscious that someone would recognize it when in public. When I put the 5231 beside my other Pateks, you get a punch in the face of a tiny piece of art with splashes of color, and then you realize that that is also an engineering marvel (especially with the 240 micro), this piece is the dime among nickels.

Its funny, sometimes you spend years hunting for trophies, then once in a blue moon a trophies find you.

Thanks for reading.

what a great and unique piece ...

but can you elaborate on the story between first viewing it, to placing the bid and to actually get the allocation? do you think you were the only one (or fastest one)?

I’m now a big world Time fan, they seem to be getting the credit they deserve, it would be nice to see some wrist shots in a brighter light of that dial, truly stunning
