Icon19 Speeding Ticket UPDATE...

We reached a resolution with the Court and our Lawyer today regarding the speeding ticket we got a few months ago!

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=843576

Negotiated the ticket down to under the dreaded 100mph and got approval to get the ticket removed with traffic school! Amazing how you can pay $2k and make a mistake go away forever! So glad we called a lawyer to get involved. We learned a valuable lesson and will be keeping it slow on our future road trips.

I still say Shame on you Officer for not doing your job right. Adding unnecessary comments, treating others with disrespect and literally being condescending to someone you pull over is not right!

Realistically, he was probably just bitter at the Porsche you could afford. So he took a shot at the color and exaggerated your speed

Glad it’s been resolved Larry.

I would not say that. Not choosing sides, but if I had to chase down someone doing over a hundred mph, I too would be a little ticked off.

In NYC, Highway Officers are trained and certified in visual speed estimates, utilizing roadway markings to time speed and radar. I'm sure that nationwide Officers are likely trained in the same skillset.

Glad that it work out (although somewhat costly) and enjoy that beautiful automobile.

Yep. Used a lawyer for my last traffic violation. Money well spent. And lesson learned from my impatience following a truck doing 10MPH (literally). After 5 minutes of that, I quickly passed in a non passing zone, and conveniently right in front of a cop.

As I posted in your original thread, as a cop, you don't give a lecture and a ticket in the same stop. It's one or the other.

I was also trained and certified in visual speed estimates. In CA, you're required to visually estimate the speed and you CONFIRM it with the radar.

But, there's no requirement to chase down someone doing over 100 mph. I'd put out the info and hopefully the next officer up the road makes the stop. No matter how fast the car is, it can't out run the radio.

Last time the officer said, "Guess you thought you were out of the city limits . . . ". The time before that:

Thanks for not making me chase you a few miles down the highway ... Pour the beer out and sit here until I come back (Ninety minutes)

I’m really glad it worked out for you. It’s never fun being confronted by revenue generators. However in the future I can’t recommend enough that everyone get some sort of protection in the way of counter measures. At the very least use Waze and pay attention to it. I take it much further than that. City, county and state agencies get enough money from us already. In this case they still get their money and you had to give a donation to a lawyer. But in the end that’s the way it worked out best for you.

I agree that it comes down to the factual question of the speed. Here we only have OP’s version, and I was taking him at his word that he was under 100. If someone is actually ripping it at over 100, a lot of cops will be justifiably ticked off, because that is like a middle finger at the rules of the road.

Holy smokes Larry … here in our area if you’re caught going 50 km (31 mph) over you are faced with the following:

You're issued a Summons to appear in court. If you fail to appear in court a warrant for your arrest can be issued
Automatic 7 day vehicle impoundment
Automatic 7 day drivers licence suspension
Minimum fine of $2,000 up to $10,000
Up to 6 months in jail, with or without the above fine
Drivers licence suspension for a 1st conviction up to 2 years
Drivers licence suspension for a 2nd conviction not more than 10 years
Massive insurance increases IF you can even get insurance

Glad it worked out for you

I generally detest the variability in enforcement of speed limits, having received a few tickets myself. While I'm glad Larry reached a satisfactory conclusion, it's quite true that if you've got the money and/or the time you are treated favorably in our legal system.

Michigan was a happy middle ground of pretty reasonable enforcement other than the crappy township department near our prior home. Otherwise the highway patrol was great. When I lived in Ohio it was pretty draconian. Now that I'm in Chicago, we are practically begging for some enforcement on the interstates and main thoroughfares.

Ouch, that's an expensive lesson. But it beats the hell out of an accident.

On a slightly related note: I was returning from the post office to get on a scheduled Zoom call. I get behind a guy driving 15mph in a 25 that also never stopped for stop signs. You know the type. We approached a 4 way stop light, our light was green, and then he decides to stop. I had enough and passed him to make the light. I thought I was good until I spotted the county sheriff behind me.

The cop asked me what that was all about. I replied, let me put it this way, my wife says I need a little patience. I tell her I have a little patience, what I need is A LOT of patience. He tried to hold back a laugh and took my license. When he returned he said, next time listen to your wife. Have a nice day.

Ive heard a lot of people say this.

But I know literally dozens of people that have gotten popped over 100. Myself included.

Only heard of one dude going to jail. I was trailing behind him actually. Didn’t want to go quite as fast as he was going.

But he only got arrested because he was driving without a license too. The other car pulled over with him was let go. They were going faaaasssttttt. In Utah….

Holy moly brother. If I had to go to jail for six months all for going 100 mph I think it would be best for everyone if they just left me in there. Good grief

Glad you reached a satisfactory resolution. I’m curious, though. What was the snarky comment that the officer made about the color of your car?

Agreed.

Sorry Larry, but after doing 100 mph your comments, well lets just say they are just wrong. But don't get me wrong I'm no angel. Been awhile but I've not always been the most responsible.

Besides not holding it against you that things worked out, I'm also glad to hear no one got hurt.

Absolutely... however it's apparently less than a 30% conviction rate.

Also Miami Blue is a killer color

Oh, it's real. It's one thing if you are going 100 in a 75 on the interstate....it's another if you are going 100 in a 30. In Milwaukee, they impound your car if you are reckless driving now, too (which normally they define as 25MPH over the speed limit).

Also....cops are REALLY good at estimating speed....yes, even to 100 MPH. Ask me how I know.....

I'm sure the cop has seen a few instances where body parts were splattered about after someone got in an accident going 100....so I can see why he was angry. Not sure why it's shame on him.....
