it was an easy choice for me since the (very beautiful) RO is too large for me. the nautilus wears much smaller.

Beautiful piece! I sold a DD2 for the 5711/1r so I think you made the right choice.

thanks. actually, i think of the 5711R more as a great piece of jewellery than as a horological achievement of PP. the polishing is amazing and the surfaces are very satisfactory to touch. it could almost be a daily wearer except that it will probably scratch easily. i decided (almost again) to take it as my only watch to my next trip the coming week (arabic gulf and hongkong) but the more i think of it the less sure i get that i want to lug it around in airplanes during overnight flights. maybe better take out the 5712R again or my rolex GMT 2.....

I’m thinking a lot about this piece myself. I’m not sure about the brown dial. How do you like it and would you prefer a black dial like the 5980?

i like it a lot. it wears super comfy, at least as well as any rolex and i love the brown dial. it is a great piece of jewellery and a rather flat watch, the trade off is the lack of complications. i do truly dislike the patek date wheels (like on the 5712R) and much prefer the date window.

Having owned both, I prefer the 5711r. The chocolate dial has more character and flash than the black one, and I always disliked the bullseye chrono.

I have never worn or held a Nautilus. Can you hack the second hand. I can’t on my 5035 or Aquanaut.

Wow cool. I can pick up a 5711R for 42k. I’ll have to trade some pieces though to make up the difference. I just wasn’t sure about the brown dial.

Congratulations! Like you, I was looking at a gold Rolex Day-Date for my first gold watch. Now I will be getting a Patek Philippe as well instead of the Rolex. Although mine will not e a Nautilus, I hope to see one in real life some day. They are so rare, my AD did not have a single one in any configuration.

While I do have a passion for Rolex, for me the Patek Philippe is also the best choice for a gold watch. That is, unless I can afford another at some point

Cheers,
Carl

you can apply pressure on the crown until the second hand stops (there are youtube vids on that). some say though that it damages the caliber - haven't done it and see no need to.

You can’t , 5980 it’s the worst one , doesn’t have a second hand, so you have to keep running the second hand so it doesn’t look dead.

The brown dial is like dark chocolate as opposed to Rolex's milk chocolate so it will probably be very good for you if you like black. The chocolate works very smoothly with the RG to create a sumptuous piece of gorgeousness.

Neil, I don’t know if your description makes me happy I own this watch, or if it just makes me hungry!

I know, must confess I was eating some Reeses peanut butter cups at the time.

But they were sugar free.

Which dial were you considering on the DD?
