I'd really try to get a service dial and keep the matte. It's not original, but I think it would still be a nice to have. RSC will take your old one and still make you pay out for the new luminova...

Interesting thread and good responses.

My questions is: what do you think Rolex did (or does) will all those vintage dials it replaced with service ones. Do you think they put them away or were they considered "damaged" and ultimately *gasp* disposed?

Probably chucked, I'd think.

I have 3 vintage Rolex...a 1675, 1680 and 5512....the 1680 and 5512 have luminova hands and dials, and glow like torches...the 1675 has a Snow White tritium dial, but I have a lumi service dial in my watch box. I personally love a dial that glows, and at least with the 1680, I have the original dial and hands...it is your watch, enjoy it your way!!

Old thread..but to clarify (for anyone that searches), the 1680 service dial is still a matte dial... I like the combo!

I understand both opinions. Collectors want originality. Divers want functionality. My 1680 is from 1974, bought new for $325.00. The tritium died long ago. It now has the luminova red sub service replacement dial (quite a mouthful!) And now I hear that dial is highly collectible. My bracelet is a clanky mess, and I'm afraid it may fall apart underwater. I now use a brand new Tropic strap. Better fit on my old wrist. My last watch local service was 4 years ago. I no longer dive much but still take it snorkeling.
