Are women viewed differently by Rolex ADs?

I’m primarily a vintage guy. But I wanted a ceramic Pepsi since it was announced. Went to my local AD years ago and asked to be put on the list immediately after Basel announcement. Never heard anything even though I’d follow up or pop in on occasion.

I always wore a different Rolex, had nice friendly chats with the sales rep and indicated I’d be interested in some other watches as well. Any time my wife’s jewelry needed repair, I’d bring it there. I never was a spender there bc I wasn’t going to buy anything I didn’t want. If I’m buying expensive jewelry for my wife, I go to whiteflash or Brian Gavin bc it is much higher quality than a local jewelry store. I’m sort of a diamond snob and like working with them to pick individual stones on custom made pieces. So I get it, I’m not getting a Pepsi from them. I went grey this summer.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago. Unbeknownst to me, my wife goes in to the AD and tells them she wants to buy a watch for me for my 40th birthday. She knows I want a SS Daytona so she started there knowing the answer would be no. She then asks for what she really came in for…a Black Bay 58 blue. The salesperson said they don’t carry Tudor at that location and she’d have to go their other store if she wanted Tudor. Instead of letting her walk out they ask what other watches I like, and she tells them some of the watches I have, which is primarily Rolex. They then tell her that she can “walk out of here with a Rolex today” and proceed to show her an Exp I, TT DJ, and SS DJ.

Ok, none are “hot” models but this is more than I’ve been offered. I’ve went in and indicated interest on a few references while chatting watches and never been offered anything.

Is this just a sign of availability changing or do women have better luck these days?

Sounds like your wife might just be a “hot model” or, at least hotter than you!

Hard to say. I never get offered anything, just walking in, either. I do think supply will improve this year.

I don’t think gender has anything to do with who gets offered something. I’ve been fairly lucky, but have usually had my husband with me. I honestly think the main criteria is whether or not you and the SA hit it off, and whether you bond over something. If your wife is an attractive lady, and the SA is a male, that could have worked in her favor. Who knows!?

My wife walked into my AD and bought a Sub date. They didn't know her from Eve.

I think the female director likes to sell to women probably because they are less likely to be flipping.

Well, she's also looking at buying a nice gift for you for your 40th, that might be a factor in being offered those watches for sale. Sounds like a thoughtful gesture from the sales staff to me!

PS: Happy Birthday and enjoy

Depends. What's your definition of a woman? I honestly don't know these days.

My feeling is similar regarding the flipping aspect. Though, it's possible that a woman could be perceived also as a less likely customer to repeat shop for another watch (but maybe jewelry?). Just a guess of course.

Why wouldn’t they. SA’s want to maximize sales, and in the process of doing so they’re going to profile potential customers.

Being female in a sea of male customers will definitely be different.

If they think there’s a potential for women watch or jewelry sales, which theoretically is higher to a woman, seems like a good reason to favor them.

On that note, I don’t think any of those watches are that hard to get these days. Market availability is definitely getting better.

Didn’t think mine would either but she saw me trying on a BB58 in Turks a few months ago and I mentioned it would be a great travel watch.

Maybe it's the nature on how men/women shop. I'm making generalities but my wife and I are very different shoppers. I go in looking for what I want and generally won't deviate much. My wife on the other hand has quite the wag and will generally walk out with something, whether it's for me, or herself. Its sounds like the AD keyed in on that.

I think it has more to do with the rapport the SA felt, the Birthday reasoning, and simple good luck

I think the SA saw in your wife a potential jewelry buyer. Was she wearing diamonds?

Fundamentally it sounds like the SA liked your wife better than you. This might me a moment for reflection.

Anecdotally, with no history, women have better chance at the watch you want.

Just let them have this for the male privilege you've enjoyed for so long.

So many other factors at play to make a decisive statement about this. They could always hit it off with the SA/GM or you arrived at the right time and they were looking to move a certain model, etc.

IME at least Rolex watches intended for women are viewed differently - they don't sell very well, hence they are trivially easy to buy. I've effortlessly managed to buy four for my wife during the 'drought' and ADs will always produce a TT DJ just by asking in big metro areas.

The recipe:
- "Do you have a GMT..."
- "No"
- "Well ok, may be interested in a DJ36 for my wife..."
- "Yes here you go! Want it wrapped?"

There's no flip value in a DJ. No need to buy Omega/Tudor/GS or marked-up jewelry, skip the waiting list. The faux 'relationship' only exists because ADs know they have men on the hook - stainless steel might as well be cast out of pure meteorite metal.

Right?

“Honey, I got your message and I’ll pick up a bag of milk and loaf of bread on the way home.

If you get a chance, please pop in to the Rolex AD and ask them if they have a Daytona Le Mans for you”.

Yes, the privilege to die face down in the sand on a foreign land. What a load of crap.

Men live shorter lives. Experience higher rates of poisoning and suicide. It's all lies.
