Is this a patek? If so any idea what model?
Hi all, a friend's father used to collect old pocket watches. He claimed that this is a Patek. I don't know very much about either pocket watches or patek. What do you think? I'll try to get more photos.

It's possible that the movement inside was made by Patek Philippe but we would need a picture of it to confirm it. I'm afraid this picture doesn't tell anything more than the fact that this watch is a Tiffany & Co.

Yup, if you look at the case you will see a gap where a small knife may be used to gently pop open the case. Once open, you will be looking at the movement, and it will say if it's a Patek...

Pics of movement and inside caseback
Hi all, I was able to obtain some photos of the movement and inside caseback. Any thoughts?

I'm not an expert but it looks quite good to me, Patek and Tiffany have had a good relationship for quite a long time now and since this watch has a minute repeater it's very possible that it was made by them as not many companies made those back in the days.

Check out the auction sites like Antiquorum and Christies - you may be able to find similar lots in recent sales that will give you an idea. The number of PP pocket watches appearing at auction has increased dramatically in the last 3 years.

If patek made this piece , they will have records
I would contact PP archive dept with details of movement number and cae number- what concerns me is that both numbers are the same 197623
This is a very special movement - minute repeater and if made by PP for Tiffany , I would have expected the name PP on the dial as well One thought is that the movement is recased- ie case not made by PP However PP will have the final say good luck and let us know what transpires Thanks Julian |

The movement has a classic Patek design in the style of the bridges. If it's a minute repeater, that is really cool. Definitely worthwhile.

The movement number 197623 is the same as the case. Patek also in the early 1900s supplied movement and Tiffany cased their own. There are also Patek
/ Tiffany pocket watches whereby the movement and case are by Patek. Your movement is Patek, of course, an application to Patek Archive shall reveal the full details. |

This is an amazing watch, a Minute Repeater in a pocket watch by Tiffany & Co. - Patek Philippe.
Do try to obtain an Extract from the Archives, would be great to learn more about the watch. You are so lucky to be able to hold a piece of watch history |

Definitely a minute repeater Patek, you see the 2 gongs in the movement, which means this does have value, not sure how much but I would think at least in the tens of thousands, maybe even much more than 100K, but not sure exactly. In any case if it works I would love to hear it work.
Very very cool |

Quarter repeaters have 2 gongs as well.
A Patek /Tiffany minute repeater sold for 12k on ebay. In a more desirable hunting case. If minute repeater they sell for 10k to 20k on ebay. Under 10k if quarter repeater. Much more common in pocket watches compared to wrist watches, and bring far less. Think 10%. |

On the right side of the case is a gold slide. If you push that down along the side of the case, it will chime the time. If it is a quarter repeater it will chime the hours then quarter hours. If a minute repeater it will chime the minutes after the quarter hours. |

The "Gongs" are bent metal rods that go around the perimeter of the movement.
"Hammers" will strike the gong, to make the chiming sound. |

They are called "spade " or "pear" hands
PS Did the OP ever get the extract from PP? |

Minute repeater means that by activating the slide on the side, you will get the time by the 2 gongs hitting a metal bar which goes around the watch, it is one of the, if not the most complicated complication a watch can have, if it's really made by Patek this is a very special watch and should be worth a really hefty sum, you should get it expertized, it is worth paying the 200 dollars or so that he will ask, like this he will confirm or not that this is really a Patek, and give you an estimation on what you could get for it in an auction, don't forget that in an auction the auction house takes a big percentage.

Hey all. I'm afraid I don't have a resolution for this. My friend still has it but nothing was ever done such as have Patek authenticate. So the verdict is still to be determined.
