Setting moonphase indicators before the internet

I enjoy looking up the exact phase of the moon on the Patek website to set my 5712 when I put in in rotation.

At the risk of sounding stupid - duh, they looked at the moon, dummy - how did these things get set precisely before the internet ? Perhaps published in the newspapers ?

You can still purchase a calendar that indicates a moon phase.

Interestingly, The new new Moon is of importance to the Jewish religion, therefore every Jewish calendar indicates when the new moon begins. And has shown that for about 2000 years.

There are such things as almanacs, and so on, but as you say, the easiest thing is just to look at the moon. You can spot full moon or new moon to the nearest day or so.

Typically every Patek watch w a moon phase comes WITH literature on how to set the moonphase correctly.

There is a very helpful page on the Patek.com site for setting the moon phase to the current date.

Thanks very much for the responses and very interesting to learn about the Jewish calendar.

@ el1125 - my watch didn't come with any literature on moonphases other than which pusher operated it and a direction to the Patek website for the current phase.
