Next purchase 5970G or 5980-1A-019?

Hey Guys,

Kinda new to this forum. I’ve own a couple Patek for quite sometime, nothing over the top. 5110p, 5135G, and 5960P (supposedly my grail watch ). Recently, I got the buzz again. Looking into getting the Patek 5970G (5970P is out of reach) or Patek 5980-1A-019 white. I was wondering if you guys can Chime in, opinions/inputs are much appreciated!

My worries on 5980 is the Super Hype, will it Hold? At this paces. Looking at it in 2007 @$35k, 2009-2014 @$45k, 2016-2018 @$65-$80k, Now $100k???

5970G is classic/modern, price I’ve seen in 2008 @$100k, 2012-2013 @145-150k, 2016-2018 @$135-$140k, Steady, possibles more room grow? Or just steady...

Most of my watch guys say stick with Nautilus, it’s still going!

Watch sellers, it’s more for your money on 5970G, Nautilus at the peak...

I’m a bit confused???

5970G would be my choice. But which one do you like more?

I would happy be with both, but at 3x it’s price on 5980A. Not knowing how it would hold... It only been 6-8months that it sitting at $100k. I do fell that 5980 would be more enjoyable, all out uses, that’s the Big +++

Very different watches, my personal preference would be the 5970G, I think it's more interesting. How do you plan to wear the watch and how long do you think you'll hold on to it?

As a for work watch, pleasure watch. I’m more of what do I feel like today, this week person. How long? I can’t even answer that... You always think, this is it, but then somethings come along...

Leaving factors like price and hype aside, definitely the 5970G.

I would take the 5970g but I think you'll go for the money play.

I do love the 5980 but the fact these are trading anywhere near the same level is a joke to me

Ufboy73, I agree. That’s the hardest part to swallow, but if it stay steady @100k. I really do like it for its versatility.

I hear you...i am just a pretty risk averse guy and i would worry the intrinsic and/or longer term value just might not be there on many of the Nautilus currently going way over fairly recent available msrp’s.

I guess i would say out of the nautilus family, id expect the 5980 to do better than most when it comes to any potential price fluctuations, but still....

I dont really buy watches for future investment/appreciation purposes - but thats a different principle to me than not buying a watch at currently inflated prices because you worry about future price equilibrium.

Id also say, just for me, id have no problem rocking a 5970 in a variety of contexts...its like a white t-shirt/grail to me in that way...maybe not with a bathing suit but just slum it an wear a Sub at those times

I would try and get a 5990 from an AD rather than getting a 5980. You’d save a lot of money, get a better watch, and not have to worry about the hype on the 5980.

Fully agree on 5980. If it stay discontinued, no second, third edition. Come to think of it... I don’t know why I’m and Most talk/worry about Versatility??? I’m pretty sure most Patek owners have more than 2-3 watches, and there’s one or two we will beat the Shxx Out off!!! I’m @75% on 5970G, unless the Thor strikes me with lightning! :)

It’s not that easy in the States here, AD don’t even want to talk to you on Nautilus, unless your dropping $75k-$200k, every couple years... If anyone knows an AD in States that has one or just willing to sell the 5990 alone. Please, let me know?

Love my 5980. Great with a suit or T-shirt.

Still, my next watch will likely be a perpetual chrono....

Imho you can’t go wrong with a 5970.

Both watches are discontinued and sought after references.

Awesome 5980! I wish I could do both, but only one... More likely the 5970G, I’m going to keep my finger cross that 5980 will settle down a bit on $$$ :)

Both amongst my faves.
I disagree that the 5990 is a better watch btw.
OP whichever you choose you can’t go wrong if
keeping for the long term.
Good luck with your decision!

Very Nice Combo! If you have to choose one, which one of the two?
