Flaking Dial Question

Hi Guys,

I have a GMT Master (1675) that was running slow. I sent it to the Rolex Service Center in NYC and they claimed the inside of the dial is flaking off and getting into the movement.

Naturally they want to replace everything (dial, hands, crown, etc) with new parts. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this and if any of the independent guys (sent the watch to Rik Dietel about 2 years ago for a service) could patch it without replacing the dial?

I did try searching but didn't really find anything of note.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Frank

Take it back and send it to a trusted independent for a second opinion if you want to preserve the vintage nature of the watch.

CW21 independents may be able to preserve everything you currently have.

I know from painful personal experience that RSC won't do work on a movement if there's any flaking of the dial. I didn't even want a movement service, just a bezel insert, and they needed to be threatened with reporting them to trading standards before they'd do the work. Even then they insisted on me accepting in writing that there was no warranty on anything except the insert.

Likely it can be patched up without replacement. Regardless, take it to a watchmaker as was mentioned previously. Worse comes to worst you replace the dial but at least get to keep the original.

That's the reason why for service on a classic you should avoid the RSC.
Go back to Rick, he can most probably stabilise the flaking and service it.
Replacing hands and dial ruins the watch imho
