Production year by Serial # ?
Hi all,
I was doing a little research on my 16610 Sub, serial F172XXX. I checked the Serial number vs several different sites and came up with different answers. Most said 2003, 2 said 2004 and then a few other looked like there were not production in 2004, instead 2003 then 2005? It got me thinking about earlier serial number sequences and I checked my birth year 1973, again the answers were inconsistent. Some sites said 73 were serial numbers 3,200,000, others said 3,700,000? I am new to watch collecting and I assume I am just reading the info incorrectly, any easy and quick answer? Thanks |

These lists were never official Rolex publish, but compiled from owners, collectors and watch merchants the lot.
The serial number is an estimate of the production of the watch case, the other tell tale signs are bracelet codes and the booklet date code. The movement was assembled separately and could have been a while before it is match to the case, etc. However, many factors can happen after the watch left the factory, bracelets can be changed, booklets lost or simply the watch was unsold at the AD. Bill of sale is the only way to calculate warranty status.

I had this exact same experience last week when looking up a 6,58X,XXX serial number Sea-Dweller. Is there one list that is considered more accurate than others?

6.58 serial number would be late 1979 to early 1980 production.

If I use Bob's watches they say between 1981-82, if I use qualitytyme they say 80-81, Bernardwatch says 80-81, Beckertime says 80-81, minus4plus6 has late 80 early 81. So I generally go with the average that it was late 80 or early 81. I was curious if there is one source that guys tend to believe more than the rest? |
