Date of manufacture?

Hello all,

Sorry for what may be an asinine post, but I've seen differing info on dates of manufacture. The watch in question is a Rolex Datejust ref. 1603 serial #366XXXX.

I believe it is 1975?

Thanks in advance.

Case back date stamps ended during 1972 where you'll case backs stamped up to that serial number range. You'll also find the 3.6 range without case back stamps which to me would indicate 1973. 1972 or 1973 would work for me as the era of manufacture.

Early '70s Rolexes are tough to get exact dates on because of the switch-over to non-dated case backs. I've seen 4.0 mil. serials on case backs dated '72, such as this Sub 5514, which has the serial number and year correctly engraved into the case back. (The 5513 engraving is also correct.)

I've read that Rolex was using up the older dated case backs on later serial numbered watches around this time, hence the difficulty in accurate dating. My 3.7 mil. 5512 also has a '72 case back.

So many different opinions, thank you all for the input!

I could add that it is a Sigma dial, but that may muddy things up a bit more.
