PT, WG, SS, I think I can tell the difference! No really!
Now that I have all three I think I see a difference?!
PT is VERY bright almost whitish. WG is softer, warmer, tinge of yellow. SS, sharp, crisp, surgical, tinge more grayish. Obviously my worthless impressions YMMV I think you can see what I mean in the pic below? If you can you are a WIS, if not only a mere mortal (ok I have too much free time and OCD) Honestly I really think I see it in this pic too??? SS |

Hi,
I think you've hit the nail on the head, yes. And I do think it's a skill that comes with time. Initially, when I first got into Rolex about nine years ago now, I honestly couldn't see any difference between photos of watches in stainless steel, white gold and platinum. Now, I mostly can, and it's like you say: stainless steel has a very grey, classic 'metallic' appearance; white gold has a subtle undercurrent of classic yellow gold tones; and platinum has a crisp whiteness to it. I think I properly learned to tell the difference when I got my white Rolesor Datejust, and I could really see the difference in colour and tone between the steel case and the white gold bezel. |

I agree...platinum has a pure, crisp, whiteness to it and the WG definitely has a warm slightly yellow glow. Bottom line...all the precious metals are freaking awesome:)

Wow. Super nice photos.
Crazy nice watches. I wonder if I could tell if I don't know the models. But in ur pics it's very clear.

IMO it's quite obvious. I've never quite understood why it's so difficult for some.

At last,
A definative answer to this ongoing question. You have all three and you 'think' you can tell the difference. On ya mate. FWIW i agree with you.
