Getting Closer To My Goal...But Still Undecided
The Rolex fund is building and I'm right on target to obtain my first Rolex for my 65th birthday in April. Those of you who have followed some of my threads know that I bought a Black Bay Blue and sold it six months later even though I really liked the watch. Had it been a Black Bay Black I would have kept it and I can see myself picking up that beauty. That's how much more I like the black over the blue.
The two main contenders for my first, and most probably, only Rolex have been the DJ and DJII but now I'm having second thoughts, again. Here's my thinking: The DJ and DJII (smooth bezel) both tick the boxes for being versatile enough for an everyday watch and a dress watch. Since I'm retired I would rather have a watch that is not too blingy. They would both suit that purpose. Add to that all of the possible dial configurations which makes it easy to find something to like. The negatives of the DJ, to me, is it's size. Even though I don't have a large wrist (7 inches) it just looks small when compared to what I've been wearing. While I like the size of the DJII much better, the smooth bezel looks totally disproportionate to my eye. The fluted bezel doesn't work for me. Both models also have PCL's which are a negative to me. The 39mm Oyster Perpetual is a possibility. It's the size I prefer but the dial choices don't excite me that much. It's not a watch I've considered before so I would need to see them in person and try them on, specifically the dark rhodium and the blue. I would like to have seen what it looked like with a white or solid black dial as well. Then there's the Explorer 39mm. I've dismissed this model previously but I keep being drawn back to it. The size is right, the bracelet is brushed, and it lends itself to other strap options probably more than the others. Plus, it's a do everything, go anywhere classic piece. I still have time to decide and I'll reserve the right to change my mind again but that's where my thinking is at the moment. Tick tock, tick tock. |

If a date is not needed I think the 214270 would be the perfect watch for you.

How about Rolex Submariner ND 114060 ? Easy to read, pretty fair prices out there now ( some at $5500 ), very comfortable for a 7" wrist too

Of what you've said, I like the DJ2 the best. The smooth bezel/blue sticks dial is as close to perfection as you can get.
That said, a good old sub is hard to beat for the criteria you mention. But, whatever you choose, best of luck! |

It's good to take your time and try on all the different models. If you only can have one, it's better to take your time. What about a new OP?

Don't worry too much about size, try not wearing a larger watch for a while then try the dj. I picked up a vintage dj and my wrists are 7.25. I thought for sure it would be too small but when you wear it for a while your adjust to it.
Mine below. Free your mind, free your wrist....... |

I was never a fan of the Sub either, until I bought one. The best thing you can do is try them all on, spend hours at the AD. They do not mind... I personally think that you will get tired of the DJII regardless of which dial/color you go with. I do not believe the DJII is a standalone but rather a piece of a puzzle.
I am very surprised the Black Bay Blue didn't sing to you - It has actually taken away all the wrist time for all of my watches since I picked it up last week. |

DJ too small and DJII disproportionate ... have you seen how the new DD40 compare to the DDII ? Wait for Basel 2016 (by chance it's just before your 65th birthday in april). We could have a good surprise with a new DJ40 with proportionate smooth bezel ... |

I really liked the watch but always preferred that it have a black bezel. Now that there is one I can see getting it again. I actually like it better than the Sub.

Explorer 39 mm would be my choice - tough but classy.

Based on your post, I would seriously consider just waiting until Basel world incase they release the DJ40.
In my opinion, however, if you only need one watch for the rest of your life, just buy the date just 36mm. It will go with you anywhere, in any outfit, and will always looks good. 4mm really is not the end of the world. |

For a black dial anything watch, I'd go Subc over the Exp1.

I know the decision can be fun but tough...maybe check out the classic black dial Explorer...
I understand how you feel about the Tudor....not a fan of the blue, and quite honestly if you have always wanted a Rolex, stick to your plan! |

The upper range of my budget would be 6K.

From everything you have said so far the 114060 seems to fit the bill!

Wow. Totally shocked you sold your Tudor after 6 months. And I follow these forums just about daily.
You still seem like a man totally undecided on what timepiece to have on your wrist!! FWIW, did you have as hard a time finding the right woman to marry?? No offense meant! LOL |

DJ should have a fluted bezel IMO... Quintessential Rolex.
In any case, don't think about what OTHERS may think, just go with your heart. Just curious, outside of Rolex, what would be your two or three most favorite chronometers? PS: Explorer 39mm is indeed nice and classy. |
