Rolex 1655 Explorer II - Refinished hand or after-market dial?

I realize this is a blasphemous question to ask on this forum...

I'm trying to restore my dad's 1655 Explorer II. In order to bring the dial up to a 1972 standard, I'm looking at at least $1000 (at least). The current dial is a poorly refinished Mark 4, Mark 5 or Mark 6.

With a serial # of 291****, it should have a Mark 1 or Mark 2 dial.

While saving some money for an original dial, I'd like to bring the look of the watch's dial to that of the original 1972 style.

Question....

* What would the most preferred solution be, buy a refinished Mark 1 dial or an after-market Mark 1 dial?

* Would a refinished dial be in a similar price bracket than that of the original dial, or is there a difference between the two?

* Would adding an aftermarket dial from now until I can replace it with an original dial damage the watch in any way?

Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

An "aftermarket" dial means counterfeit to me. If it says Rolex and it never came from the Rolex factory, that's a counterfeit good.

A refinished dial will certainly be cheaper than a good original dial. Since this is a stopgap measure while you save/search for an original dial, have you considered a service dial?

I recently bought a Rolex service luminova dial, hands set and bezel for 2K.
Post an ad on VRM
A refinished dial would be between 450 to 700 USD and IMHO not worth buying
Go for original Rolex parts
