Buying SS Sub in Tokyo at AD

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am traveling to Tokyo in late February and want to purchase a SS Sub from an AD. After reading through the forum I am realizing it could be difficult finding SS rolexs (Per posts/threads from 2015). My logic is that since I am going in the dead of winter and less tourists are going to be in Tokyo it might be easier to find? Any throughts on this.

The second question:
Do AD's in department stores still give the 5% discount to tourists?

After doing the math I am looking at about $6800 for a SS Sub with date in Tokyo (current exchange rate). Considering AD's in the DC area will not give any discount I think $6800 is a steal. Any thoughts or insight will be much appreciated.

First time poster!

Welcome!
Let me be upfront, finding a SS model in an Japanese AD is very very unlikely. All of the grey dealers in Tokyo instantly buy them. You should try Houseki Hiroba (located in shibuya // google that) or walk around the shinjuku area where there are many great shops (gmt-j // google that too). And since Japanese are know for there love of high quality goods and the perfect level of detail you will be able to find almost new pieces for great prices.

AD's in stores some give 8% discount but that is just the tax back others charge you some % for the tax giving effectively 5% back. Be prepared to pay 3% on any purchase by creditcard

Happy hunting!

Feel free to PM with other questions

I bought a 116610 this last summer in Canada got a 10% discount. With taxes and exchange rate it was like high $7400ish. I think the msrp is $8600ish where I'm at in the midwest. Don't forget tax and declaration of purchase.

I was just in Tokyo last month and bought a 116655. I went to several of the department stores - they did have SS subs - but of course didn't see a BLNR or SS Daytona.

I bought my Yachtmaster at the Roppongi Hills Rolex boutique - which was brand new and had one of the best selections I saw. I didn't bother haggling over price - because you won't pay tax and the exchange rate is so favorable right now it's a nice discount. Which is why I bought in Tokyo.

It was a very pleasant experience. My sales woman spoke limited English - but the Roppongi Hills complex provided a translator. Purchasing it took about an hour - there was extra paperwork - they staple some documentation into your passport (they want to make sure you are taking the watch out of the country - part of the condition of not paying tax).

I paid customs on the watch in the U.S. - The tax rate for that was around 3 percent. Very easy.

Japanese department store ADs extend the 5% discount if you open up a credit card with them. Otherwise zero discount. Bring your passport and you will get the tax back. Deals are hard to find in Japan right now as the Chinese come over on shopping tours and just pay cash at the asking price.

Good luck.

No anger. Just bemusement.

But how does your comment help the OP...really?

You cite what appears (to me at least) of being an oddly specific / high (double digit) discount of 17% because you had "relationships with ADs" in Japan??? doesn't really help the OP IMO.

If you want to help...name which Japanese ADs would provide this tremendous benefit to a first-time (likely one time) buyer of an in-demand SS model like the OP.

AD price for sub c 114060 yen 766800 in Japan, you can get exempted tax about 8% on the spot most of the time. Sometimes you need to redeem at special counter inside the building or mall.

You can get also brand new at grey dealers, in Tokyo I'm unsure but yodobashi or bic camera have some rolex. The display price on yodobashi or bic are same as AD at least in Osaka, but try your luck to haggle for discount. I did that.

The key here is you should know the retail price at AD and make comparison at grey dealer and ask for discount.

Per every AD I've been to in Japan, I've been to about 5, they've always had an 116610LN on hand. I hear that they get more SS models than any other country.

The second question:

I believe Gaijin answered this correctly. You'll just get your 8% back (for the 8% tax), but with fees for getting your refund back it comes out to around 6% back.

After doing the math I am looking at about $6800 for a SS Sub with date in Tokyo (current exchange rate). Considering AD's in the DC area will not give any discount I think $6800 is a steal. Any thoughts or insight will be much appreciated.

Thank you! I paid full retail without tax which is about $7200 (810,000 Yen) with today's exchange rate. I'm my opinion it was a great deal.

I purchased it from the AD in Roppongi Hills. In my opinion it has the best and largest Rolex selection. The store is the nicest Rolex boutique I have seen.
