I have owned 3 Grand Seiko's, they were excellent watches. There resell sucks, but their quality is unmatched imo.
Here was the last one I had. |

I'm a huge fan of Seiko, I'm a sucker for value.
Got hooked with the $250 diver, SKX007. Classic design, ultra functional, insane value. Then I got a SPRA21 PADI turtle for $400. Built like an absolute tank. As sturdy and reliable as my $8000 Rolex sub. Then I went GS. SBGJ001 Hi-beat GMT for $5k. Easily my most highly finished watch, way out in front of several Rolex (hulk, 16710 GMT, air king, Milgauss). This thing feels like a $20k AP for God's sake. Worth it? is highly subjective. Let's face it, none of these watches are worth it at a very deep level. What do you want for the money? GS has quality covered. Prestige, name recognition, not so much. Is that why you collect watches? |

GS has all the quality I like about Rolex - Precision, Design, Balance, History, Technology. In exceeds Rolex quality in ways such as surface treatment and polish. My next watch purchase will be GS over Rolex.

The latest round of GS modifications--the removal of the odd text in an even more odd font--has sealed it for me too.

At $5,000.00 MSRP, i'd say the Grand Seiko Snowflake is an incredible value. Smaller production run, hand assembled and finished, sharp beveled and faceted edges on indices/hands using Zaratsu polishing techniques, interesting technology used the movement, detailed textured dial unique to each watch, in-house down to the lubricants, rich history, titanium alloy blend, engraved grown etc. Swiss brand's offering similar combination of traits and qualities cost far more. GS has my respect as a watch enthusiast for sure. Bonus: Some Eye Candy:

I saw a short video on GS (I think Hodinkee or Monocle Magazine) where they interviewed the watch makers of the movements. It was amazing, I would definitely put GS in the datejust category, I think their finishing blows away a lot of the competition like breitling, bell, etc. The Japanese are incredible craftsman and the making of a GS was akin to the making of a fine samurai sword. But as stated above value is still something to be derived from the individual's utility and happiness factors :)

Unless you have seen the face of the Snowflake in person, you cannot fully appreciate it.

I think Grand Seiko's reputation and status will only get better around the world, and unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately for existing owners of GS watches) with it, its prices will as well. |

Grand Seiko is one of the most respected brands in the watch industry...
those who say its not worth the $$$......and Rolex IS!!!!! when you purchase a Grand Seiko you essentially get a haute horology brand that is equal to if not exceeding Rolex quality......oh...and rolex is not 'haute horology' either |

Grand Seiko are quantifyably superb, but I understand if you absolutely need waiters and valets to appreciate what a big shot you are...they likely wouldn't know the MSRP of Lange, Blancpain, JLC, Vacheron, IWC, etc so better avoid those too....

Absolutely worth it. In fact, from a "Value for money" perspective, I don't think there is any other brand close to GS.

Turn in your WIS card 😊
Great comparison Wingman244. I still have cheap Seiko divers from 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s that run when set and and wound or shaken that have never been serviced.

I have just got my first Grand Seiko but I think it will be last time. Although I love it in general due to crappy push in links with tubes on them it's very cheap and frustrating experience to re insert the links. Whereas it were a Swiss Brand for this price point it would come with proper screws that would not screw the enjoyment of the watch

Don’t think about buying a Patek Philippe Nautilus then, you’ll be disappointed that theirs doesn’t sport screw. Collar and pins can be more secure since you don’t need to use industrial glue, worry about screws backing themselves out, or amateurs wrecking the screw head. Some Grand Seikos have screwed bracelets, so it’s nothing to do with cheapness, but more to do with properly engineered solutions and considering protecting consumers from their own incompetence. A shame you’ve taken to viewing things as negative, and besides which, how often exactly do you intend to remove/add links for it to be such an issue? |

Hey,
Thank you for your reply. I think they over engineered it. I can easily remove or add links in my Rolex watches easily without scratching the flanks of the bracelet or any other watch with screw links. I think they also look more solid, stout and robust when removed as opposed to flexibility of the link bars. At least it gives me that feeling. Yes, they can get loose just in case I regularly check their tightness too
