are these older models sometimes hard to start? It was in the drawer for awhile I wore it for about a half hour then it was dead. Wouldnt start until I gave it a few good shakes. Then I wound it up and its been good so far

Have you tried winding the crown about 40 times before wearing it? (not every time you wear it, only if it has completely wound down).

While searching the forum I noticed this same model also does not have the T swiss dial either, looks just like mine. Did Rolex switch these out during service or what ? And what year would it have been serviced to get this dial.
Here is the borrowed picture
Looks just like mine

Very nice watch! I could be wrong, but wouldn't a 1972 1680 Sub be originally equipped with a red T<25 dial? It would make perfect sense if a Swiss only dial were added at service and that would be my assumption. I have heard of some white subs from this era but I'll wait for the trie vintage experts to chime in. Regardless, that watch is certainly something special OP, very nice indeed.

Ok again when I took it off for bed it stopped and I had to give it a little shake and it started again . I went ahead and wound it again this time I'm facing it on its side instead of face up

Nice watch, just to confirm that it has a luminova service dial and hands and if 1972 would have had a red dial originally

Layed the watch faceup last night and it was dead this morning. Wound it and layed it on its side and still ...... After being dead had to give it a little shake

If the watch keeps stopping and starting after a thorough winding, it's probably time for a service. Have a reputable watchmaker check it out.

Great watch. Congrats! Would be extra cool to have a red service dial inserted. I wonder if You could get RSC to do that.

If I had my dads watch I would never look back. I wouldn't care if the dial was replaced, if it was polished out, if the twinlock was replaced with a triplock or any other official Rolex change.

Congrats on having it passed on to you. I hope you get to do the same.
