Dress watch recommendation
Hello,
Looking to buy a nice dress watch to complement a sportier VC Overseas Deepstream Dual Time. My main options at the moment are: - Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Luminaire in rose gold - Patek Philippe 5146G with grey dial in white gold Primary use would be as a daily driver to work, although may also dress down with jeans a a T-Shirt. Leaning towards the 5146G at the moment as it seems more versatile but there's just something about the JLC. Are there other options I should consider? |

I agree with everyone and say Lange. They pretty much only do dress watches so they do it very well.

I don't wear dress watches but prefer Lange or Vacheron.

Don't wear dress watches either but if I did it would be a Calatrava or an ALS.

The JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar presents good value and made a cameo on Dr. Strange's wrist as well.

Just about every brand makes a nice dress watch, including quite a few from AP as this is in their forum. I really like the millinery line, quite good value on the used market as well.
I own the 5146g with slate dial, could not be happier with it. |

If you're looking for dress watches, I would consider the Patek Philippe Gondolo 5098J or P. They are stunning in person IMO.

Of the 2, 5146g. The JLC is too busy in my not so humble opinion.

Another vote for ALS if we're talking looks. Between the 2 listed, I prefer the JLC as I honestly don't think the 5146 looks as special (but just my opinion).

PP, the JLC is too busy for a dress watch.

I love IWC dress watches. They always really spoke to me but a simple PP or ALS would be great too.

Have you had a chance to try both of these watches in person? You will notice that the 5146 is well liked in the Patek Philippe subforum here on TRF. The 5146 has been around for 10 years and it's predecessor, the 5035, for another 10 years before that. It has a classic appearance without trying to be too fancy. Its luminescent hands can come in handy in dim illumination as well. The 5146G slate dial was my first complicated Patek watch and I still wear it from time to time. |

That Jaeger wears really freaking well :-) I tried it on in person and loved every single bit of it. Given the current JLC prices, I'd look for a gently pre-loved specimen. You should easily get it for about low 20s.

Of the two listed I would go with the PP. If I was looking, I would look at a more calm watch from JLC and buy pre-owned and save a lot.

Dress watches?
I would argue that neither of your choices is a dress watch - too complicated and too thick to be a discreet dress watch - more like everyday watches to me.
I think the JLC Master Ultrathin with no complications comes about as close as you can get. JLC also have some beautiful Tribute Reverso's with two hands that are great dress watches. Breguet also do a beautiful handwound no complication watch in wg. Lange have the Richard Lange or find a preowned Cabaret. The Lange 1 isn't really a dress watch - it's an everyday watch. The moonphase on the Lange 1 is lovely but a PITA to adjust if you don't wear the watch everyday. |

I'd go with the PP slate dial, love that piece. Can easily dress down if you want.
The Duometre is amazing piece and on my personal list to get one day, but don't know about it's ability to dress down. It's also a lot of watch for the money. Can be had in the mid 20's, I think. Both pieces are great choices, can't lose. |
