Double Red Sea Dweller serial number

I am looking to buy a 1973 DRSD and I have a question.
the one that I am looking at, the inner case back has 72 ingraved, but the serial number is 35X,XXX which dates the watch to 1973.
Does anyone know if this is normal? or should the inner case have 73?
I was born in 1973 so I want to buy a 1973 DRSD.
Any help would be much apriciated.

Sounds about right. I would be happy enough for that to be my birth year watch. If I was born in 73

An often-asked question ... The early '70s are tough to pinpoint dates exactly because Rolex transitioned away from engraving years on case backs around that time, but presumably they were using up case backs engraved "'72" on watches with slightly later serial numbers. So, you can see cases as late as 4.0 mil. with case backs engraved "'72."

My 3.7 mil. 5512 has a case back engraved "72," but accepted serial number charts say 1973 for this watch (the bracelet clasp is engraved '73).

I'd say you're definitely in the neighborhood of 1972-73 with a 3.5 mil. watch, but the charts are only estimates. And for all you know, that DRSD was actually assembled, shipped and sold a couple of years later anyway.

There are no 73 case back stamps. A '72 case back stamp would fall within the range for your serial number.

Feel free to review my case back dating chart that I've put together the past several years.

I can add that my 1973 DRSD (3.7M) has the serial number engraved on the inner caseback with 1665 underneath.

My 5.2 million serial SD has the full serial number engraved inside the case back as well.
